  1. Congrats on the decisions, Moochie, Letshike, Doodle, Lorde, and Darkstar! After long weeks of deliberation, and weighing all the pros and cons with going to a "2000 and late" school (should have applied to Southern Golf Coast Delaware Tech), I have decided to accept Stanford's offer. Go Cardinals! *edited to add: Um, why is there a quota for positive votes?
  2. ETS apparently just filed for bankruptcy and won't be administering the GRE anymore starting tomorrow.
  3. I know it's a different school, but FWIW, my online status still says "Submitted". I was officially accepted almost a month ago, and I have already officially accepted the offer (with new student ID). Not sure when that would change, to be honest. Edited to add: Congrats on UT, Lorde!!!!
  4. Herein lies the deep-rooted difference between geology and geophysics majors!
  5. During this season's prospective student visit at Stanford, I found that all invited students (applying for PhD) have done an undergraduate (Honors) thesis, just to give you a perspective. Granted that this is a different department (Geology), I think it would greatly strengthen your application (as well as focus your research interests) if you do an undergraduate thesis. My two cents. FWIW, there were 3 international students during the visit, 2 from Canada and 1 from the UK. Good luck to you! *edited to add: Especially if a PhD is your immediate goal after undergrad, then a thesis is the best way to get your feet wet with independent research!
  6. My two cents: Aside from a strong coursework, I think it is important to get some research experience, perhaps over the summer since you have a heavy course load. Apply for REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) programs--a specific geophysics program is called SAGE (Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience). Website below: http://www.lanl.gov/projects/national-security-education-center/geophysics-planetary-physics/sage/sage-apply.php Best of luck!
  7. Hello everyone! I also have some good news of my own! Accepted to Stanford!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The prospective student visit was just this past couple of days (2/23-24), and I met with my POI today (2/27) and was given my official letter of admission dated 2/23. Congrats to all who have had good news! And for everyone else, hang tight!
  8. Congrats Geomex!!!!!! Such great news to start the week! Congrats to IamLorde as well!!!! And to everyone else who had good news! @darkstar: I have a prospective student visit at Stanford. I'd like to think it is just a formality as well, especially based on the tone of the email I received. But I could also be totally wrong . I did see someone post an acceptance for Stanford GES Master's. Congrats to that person!
  9. Congrats!!! Also, the "I am Lorde, ya ya ya" episode of South Park is one of the best. Ever. Randy Marsh is a total hoot, as always.
  10. Thank you so much!!!! I am keeping my fingers crossed for everyone!!!!!!!
  11. Congrats to all who got acceptances so far! Not sure if anyone else applied to Stanford GES department, but I got an email invite for the department's prospective student visit on Feb 23-24. I know it's not an official acceptance, but I am super excited nonetheless!!!!!!!!!!
  12. Sorry to hear about your bad news! The very best of luck on your other apps!
  13. Hi sjoh, I'm really sorry for your loss. I believe that having research experience (analytical experience in particular) makes you a competitive candidate in the geosciences. Your GRE scores are also pretty good (certainly a lot better than mine). The stats we all post are just a teeny tiny window into our academic history/potential, so take what people say here with a grain of salt. As the Dude puts it: Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
  14. Me too! My GRE scores are sub-subpar (scores are almost 5 years old) and I am hoping my other credentials would shine through! Good luck to everyone! And congratulations to all who had been accepted already!
