You are NOT a total failure! We are all qualified and worthy of graduate degrees; a lot of it just comes down to fit. Hugs!

U of Rochester made admissions decisions this morning.
Rejected due to funding. At least it wasn't because I am a total failure, which has been confirmed elsewhere. LOL. Sorry--I am having one of the down days in this perpetual cycle of optimism and pessimism!

I agree with a lot of this. Personally, I have been looking at programs not necessarily in terms of rating, but how well prepared I am going to be for life outside of academia, as well as for tenure track positions. Given the future of tenure track jobs (or lack thereof), I have found myself wanting to prepare for the worst and looking at stats sequences and methodology courses and weighing in what preparation I would get for non-academic positions when applying to schools. Obviously tenure track academic positions are ideal, but these student loans aren't paying themselves.... oy.

My POI said to email someone named Erin and "We are in the midst of the process, however, so I don’t know if she will be able to provide you with much information." I am assuming rejection at this point.

Celebrating because today is the last due-date of any of my applications (Southern Illinios at Carbondale)!!!
I really hope that we get feedback this month (preferably good news - as soon as possible!)

Good to know. I wish they could just inform of us of rejections once they know they don't want us! I kind of figured at this point that no news is not exactly good news. At least my intuition was not wrong. Thanks for the info!

Rejected from Albany. Seems as if they sent out acceptances already. POI emailed me following my inquiry. This one stings.. bad. It was a top choice for me. The curse of the GRE strikes again.

Standardized testing as a make or break is garbage.

Called Carnegie Mellon and the Social/Personality/Health area will have invites out by the end of the week! Should expect a departmental email if you are invited.

Hoping I can get your opinion on this, friends!
I applied to work with two different POIs at a university. I received an interview invitation email the other day, indicating that a POI who I had not indicated wanting to work with is interested in working with me. From what I can tell, this individual has very little research interests that are a match with my own. Thinking perhaps it was a mistake, I emailed the POI who indicated that they wanted to work with me just a brief thank you for the interview invite email, just to see if they would respond saying "Who are you?!" but instead, they responded that they were excited to meet me as well. So it does not seem as if this was a mistake.
So, how exactly should I be taking this? Is it possible that they are changing their research line entirely? I do research on gender (specifically masculinity) and what implications the social construction of masculinity has on intergroup relations. This POI does research on psycholinguistics and is very heavily cognitive in their research. While I am not one to complain about an interview (heck yes!), I am a bit confused. Any insights? This ever happen to anyone else? I am just worried about being able to sound like a competent individual in the interview, which may be difficult considering I have very little prior knowledge on anything this individual researches!

Ugh. I just got an informal acceptance into umich social psychology. Sobbing at work.
I graduated with an undergrad GPA between 2.9-3.2 and have been working for five years to make up for it.

Not necessarily. SPSP would be a good, informal chance to chat with someone, but not everyone will have the opportunity to attend SPSP. (Personally, I work and cannot take the time off to attend. Other people would be in a similar situation.) It would be a poor reflection of the program to not consider someone simply because they did not attend an expensive conference.
Think of conference mingling as more of a way to make an initial impression versus the ultimate interview.

I have a feeling this week and next will bring all of us some hopefully much awaited news, once everyone is back from the holiday break. Happy new year!
