No longer holding. Maybe next year.

Still holding.

Don't worry. There are plenty of those 50s style buildings to boot. UC Davis is where us Californians take our pets when our vets can't figure out what is wrong with them. Of course, they couldn't figure out our problem either, but it was a couple of nice days off from work. Davis has a great old downtown area just off campus. Small townish, yet hip. And you are just up the freeway from the Bay Area (not to mention Sac to the east). I didn't get in this year. Maybe next year. Good luck to you all! c.

Rock on!

I'm curious about this school because it is nearby (yes, I'm thinking about next year already). Anyone out there know anything about their World Cultures Am. Lit program? I can't find any info other than what the school supplies, which is also very limited.

PhD Applicants Who Hold Master's Degrees....
commoner replied to grifter's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Yes, I am starting to look on the bright side of things now. I finally got Irvine's rejection. But I'm still waiting to hear official decisions from 3. I can tell you this for sure. If I did not go for the MA program, I would not even be close to competitive right now. My undergrad degree was in creative writing (a degree in baloney--my personal opinion). Completely short-changed on the critical side of literature. But there are plenty of admits that have an MA and plenty that do not. I think it comes down to what you have done with your BA or your MA. I don't think it is necessarily good or bad to have that MA. -
Turning down offers?
commoner replied to commoner's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Specifically for me, I'm waitlisted at UT Austin, [edit], and [edit]. I figured others might be interested too, so I thought I'd make this a more general thread. -
What offers are y'all turning down out there? Maybe you could give some of us waitlisters a little hope.

UCSB is holding my app. They tell me that they are not ready to deny me admission, but that they most likely won't have room and that I should persue other interests. :?

PhD Applicants Who Hold Master's Degrees....

I'm in the paperwork stage of finishing a terminal MA at a state school in CA (not a UC). I had a 3.6 avg in undergrad, worked for 4 years, then went back to get the MA with 4.0 avg. I am still with the same full-time job I got after undergrad so I haven't been able to do much extracurricular activities. I presented at one conference. Have taught for a year (while working full-time and writing my thesis which my reading committee has recommended that I publish). I am quite dedicated and received great LORs from professors. I'm on two waitlists (one unofficial), have received 11 rejections, and I'm still waiting for 3 decisions. mm, hm. -

Geez. Now I'm thinking about the old silent days and how nice they were. 0-11-2; 3 to go. -
No news to me yet. Online app status still says that when a decision is made it will be posted. I heard from the lit department a couple weeks ago. Still waiting for ethnic studies.

What is going on in Seattle?
commoner replied to whentostop's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I finally just got my rejection from UCDavis. Same thing. Reviewing in stacks. Sending out acceptances, some in early Feb. Giving away all the money. When I queried the dept. they told me they would have all decisions out by Mar 15. I got notice late on the 17th. Said they were impressed with my qualifications but that they could only admit a small class. Grr. OK. Back to Udub. -
I had been doing OK with my rejections. Until this Monday. Ruined my St. Pat's day festivities. Since, I have slid into a surly depression. Still have 6 more decisions to arrive, and one waitlist to hope for. But I've lost all enthusiasm at this point.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the English department. Online app status still says "No Decision" so I'm trying to be patient.

aaarrrgghh!! The silence! The silence! Where are you UCSB? Where are you Harvard? Where are you UCIrvine? Where are you UArizona? Am I the only one to not hear from these schools? Has my mail been stolen each day the notices arrived? What is going on out there? Thanks. I needed to break the silence even if it is just to hear my own voice. Back to the silence I go. -
Agreed. Still, it has been my experience teaching undergrads that they need to be taught to write, which ultimately is teaching them how to think through given situations in writing. I wonder, sometimes, how some of my students make their day-to-day decisions. That said, students who cannot think/write clearly enough to present simple essays are going to suffer in literature classes. I am of the mind that composition and literature walk hand in hand. Aesthetic criticism cannot ignore its function as a means to teach thinking/writing skills. If all we do as scholars is write to each other about how great the list of writers mentioned in the article are, then we are not doing any good for our students. But, if we are teaching them how to think/write about the artists, we are teaching them a skill that will be used in all of life's daily negotiations. I agree that the field is changing. High time for a change, I say. But it is definitely not dying.

Every generation decries the new school. That's all Deresiewicz is doing. What he thinks is important to study is no longer what the next generation thinks is important to study. That's why we need to read Graff's Clueless in Academe rather than Professing Literature. It's the now. That was the then.

No doubt. I somehow finished mine this last week. Now I have all kinds of time to stare at my inbox all day long. -
I had to spend hours on the phone with them several times to get my scores sent to Stanford, UCLA, and UT. Seems they split my scores into two accounts. So, they kept sending my subject scores and not my general scores. Thanks ETS.

Wish I had heard this kind of advice when I started my MA.

Anyone out there still waiting to hear from UC Irvine? -

I heard from Yale. They don't need me. I have yet to hear from Harvard. I emailed GSAS admissions. They say they are trying to get notices out (by snail mail) by the 15th. -
Seems to me that it is different for each school, and each program within each school. I am waitlisted at UT Austin. The later I received said that they have no ranking system and that usually about 25% receive offers of admission. I sent an email back letting them know that I was happy to hear that an offer may still be forthcoming and that if they needed any additional materials from me I'd be happy to oblige. No response. So . . . we'll see. I'm not throwing all my eggs in their basket yet, but so far it is the only good news I have heard.
