Social work consists of working with different level systems (i.e. individual, schools/communities, institutions). I used teaching experience on my resume and chalked it up as mezzo level exposure. A girl in my current program got a placement in a child development center, so I would say your experience is very much related! Don't be afraid to tack on any experience as social work experience if you feel like it is. A lot of things can qualify as SW related. Your program likely wants to see if you can identify that yourself. Good luck!

San Diego State - Culture, Program, etc?
tamburger replied to pickfights's topic in Social Workers Forum
Just from personal experience, I think SD in general is a diverse area. I'm not sure what area SDSU is in or what the school culture is like, but SD tends to have a variety of cultures and people like Asian Americans, Latinos, etc. I have only visited a few times, and the people there are pretty friendly and relaxed. Again, I don't know if that is indicative of the school culture, but those are my observations! -
I haven't looked much into family therapy, as I am hoping to do more administrative and maco-level work (i.e. policies or whatnot). However, an MFT degree might be something to look into if you want to specifically pursue that! At this point last year, I had been working at an ABA agency providing services for kids with autism from mostly immigrant and underserved backgrounds. I started mentoring students at a high school that had a high drop out rate. I also did not have a bachelor's degree in social work, but was finishing my BA. Experience is very important to the MSW program, so if you can get a job at CPS that would only help you. I think a lot of programs ask for the number of hours you've served on your resume, so they surely evaluate that. However, I wouldn't totally be discouraged by it if you don't have a ton of experience racked up by application time. Know how to spin your prior experiences to reflect how it is "social work related." GRE does not seem to be super important because some programs make it optional, but again if standardized tests are your thing, it will only help you. I took mine, but did poorly on the quantitative portion, so I chose to omit my score. Yet, I feel like I got into a fairly competitive program in my state and am happy with that! In short, I didn't do a ton of preparing last fall, since I was still a student, but yes, it is possible to get into a program without years upon years of preparation. Use all the resources the schools give you about the programs and research them well to help you do the statement of purpose. If anything, build relationships now with some people in a related field, so you can get some solid letters. Good luck!

If anyone hasn't heard back, you should be getting news soon, since the orientation is in about a week! In a similar vein, are any 2-year students interviewing for field placements next week too?
-
Hi everyone, If anyone is still on the waitlist, my 3-year spot may open up soon. I was offered a space in the 2-year program and may accept that instead. Stay positive and good luck!

You sound like a solid applicant! I have similar experience. I work with kids with autism, but mostly in in-home therapy. I taught in a school setting before with some volunteer experience with teens. I applied this year to CSULB as a student. The GRE was optional, so I chose to omit my scores, and I still got in with my resume, SOP, and whatnot. I would follow the advice on this forum and really shape your experiences to one that would thrive in the social work setting. I read up on the resources on the website to look over any program objectives and used that to communicate how my experience and social work align in my paper. Good luck!

It said I was recommended for the program and admission was contingent on me submitting the things on my checklist. That might be because I am still enrolled in my BA. I got the official email yesterday along with my financial aid package. It was for the 3 year program, which was my second choice. I'm assuming it is because the 2 year spaces may be filled. I am still thinking hard on it, although this is the only program I applied to. But I'm so glad the wait is over and I can start planning!

Congrats Alex! The schools are the same rank I think. A lot of people tend to like the LB campus because of the area (at least from my experience.) I had the same problem with not being able to log in the portal, so please update if that resolves. Best wishes to you wherever you decide to go!

No worries. You all should be hearing back soon. My app arrived a little late (on the 18th). I mailed it the weekend before and it got stuck at the post office. I'm still waiting on my email, but since my status updated, I'm guessing they are likely at the tail end of the process now.

Hey all, I've been lurking from time to time and thought since I hadn't heard by now, I must have gotten declined. Still no email, but if you haven't checked, check your applicant self-service site. I got an update. Good luck to you all!

I've only gone as far as emailed and I think I got a similar response to saidy

Congrats on your acceptances! UCLA is a great school. I bet you will enjoy it there. Did LB email you about processing your application? When I got an email from them last, all they said was that my materials were received and they would review it if my transcripts are in

Bummer.. but glad it's not just me. It looks like it'll be another week down. I've been stalking the other threads in the meantime.

Congrats on both acceptances! Was CSUF your first choice? Also, were you in a BSW program? It seems like a lot of acceptances are going to those students first. So nervous because that isn't my major.

I hope so too! It seems so far away, but we're about halfway through April already. Luckily, I don't have to move or anything if admitted, but I'd like to know what to plan for the next coming months.
