I was amazed at how difficult it was to turn down an offer. It really twisted me up inside. I think the better the program and faculty are, the harder it is to let go, even when you have selected what you believe to be the program for you. I never thought about this while selecting programs to apply to.

What made it a little easier was seeing the person who got the spot I released express their excitement on the results board. That was awesome!

Same here. I teared up while writing the email to decline one of my other offers. I could have easily seen myself at either of my top two choices to which I received acceptances and it felt so personal to turn it down. I'm only now starting to not feel a pang of emotional pain thinking about it and I turned my other offer down like a month and a half ago! No idea who the acceptance ended up going to, I was kind of hoping to see someone post on the results board to at least feel a little better knowing someone was happy about it!

Hi Everyone! At the moment I'm torn between two PsyD programs and would love your input!

The two programs are the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium and Loyola University Maryland

I'm well aware of the financial benefits of going to Loyola over PGSP-Stanford, so I'm looking for more information about clinical training, how happy and/or successful students and alum are, reputation of the program in terms of the likelihood of being competitive in the job market after post doc, any big red flags I missed on interview day (minus high costs of tuition and living) etc.

I really loved both programs on interview day, so any and all thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you!

I don't know too much about PGSP but I have heard great things about Loyola; I work in the psych field in the Maryland area and the reputation is that clinicians that come out of that school are very qualified and well trained. Hope that helps! Definitely do more research into EPPP pass rates and internship match rates though...

GPA isn't everything when it comes to clinical admissions. If you have high GRE's along with a high GPA and strong research experience, then you'll be a good candidate. I was a bit over the minimum for UNB and I was still accepted, but I also had high GRE scores and a few pubs.

To add to this, yes GPA is certainly not everything when it comes to admissions. It's more of a requirement to have your application looked at (you want to have maybe a 3.5 or above then you're good) but once they narrow it down it's all about experience (mostly research, but clinical can help too) and fit (meaning research interests). Can't speak to that school specifically but this is the general game of Clinical Psych PhD apps.

    Take two students for example:

Student A: 4.0 GPA, high GRE, no research experience, somewhat related interests

Student B: 3.5 GPA, average GRE, multiple publications and posters in exactly what POI is studying

9 times out of 10, Student B is getting in. (this is a totally made up statistic by the way):o

That being said, from everything I've seen if you have a 3.85 you're probably totally fine on the GPA front.

Can we talk about average stipends we've been offered? I received an offer from a school in a big city for $17,000 and was content with it until I received an offer from a school in a rural area for $26,000. What are your guys stipends looking like? Have any of you had experience with asking for more money?

$26,000 seems high; super awesome but definitely not something I would expect from most places. Both schools I was offered funding at offered in the $15,000 range. Are we allowed to ask for more? I just accepted since I assumed what was set, was set. I don't know the protocol here lol

  5. I can't help you with the choice unfortunately since it's something that really is so personal, but in terms of accepting an offer they really aren't allowed to pressure you to accept before April 15th. As long as you are sticking to the guidelines of not holding more than 2 offers at any time (which it sounds like you are) then you're good. In my personal experience, when I had a School A offer but was still waiting to hear back from School B, I was open and transparent with School A that I was considering one other offer and was waiting to get all of the information so that I could make this very important choice. I of coursed stressed how much I was truly considering School A, not as a backup, but that I just simply couldn't make the decision without receiving information about funding etc from both schools. Hope this helps! I think most professors understand that you're making a HUGE life choice here, and if they aren't understanding/supportive of that, do you really want to work with them the next 5 years??

Congrats to everyone so far! How soon will people start to look for apartments?

I think it depends where you go. One place I interviewed was a major college town, and the students told me that when they started trying to find places in May for the upcoming fall they were already almost all taken. Another place I interviewed was a major city, of which the college is a small part of. Those grad students said renters weren't interested in letting you sign a lease until about a month before you needed it, because there's so many places on the market.

  7. School: University of Mississippi
    Program: clinical psych
    Date of Notification: 2/06/17
Method of Notification: phone call followed up with email
Thoughts: This is my third round applying, and I never had so much as 1 interview in previous cycles, and now I've had 4. I'm a little in shock and just so relieved that this is finally happening. Absolutely loved the program, however I absolutely loved one other program I interviewed with too. Still waiting on word from that one, so once I hear back from both of them I'll know where I'll actually be going!

For those who have interviewed and already secured acceptances, how did you prepare for your interviews? Is there anything in particular you did that you feel really made the difference for you?

Starting to get really nervous about my upcoming interviews!!

Honestly interviews were nowhere near as stressful as I thought. I was anticipating being grilled on everything I've done/want to do but what I found was that I had interesting conversations with people about my interests and how they fit with the program. Be confident but not cocky, and be yourself. You wouldn't be invited if you weren't qualified. Make sure you refresh your memory on anything it's been a while since you've done (old posters, projects, etc) so that you can talk openly about them. Have a working knowledge of the most recent work your POI has done. And BE NICE!! It seems silly but I've heard horror stories of rude applicants and let's be real, nobody is going to want to work with you for the next 5 years if you're not a nice person.

As part of the CUDCP Guidelines School 1 should not at all pressure you to answer prior to April 15th. IF anything I would email back and say you are considering your options (make sure to get across your excitement and gratitude)  for graduate school and will have an answer in the coming weeks. It is still early on in the process, I am sure they understand.

Thanks, yeah they definitely haven't pressured me at all; it's more my own worry. I did tell them I was excited and highly considering it and would let them know asap. I hope I conveyed the amount of excitement I do feel. I also said thank you like 5,000 times lol

  10. I've seen some advice on this already, so I guess maybe I'm seeking reassurance? I got interviews at two of my top choice schools this year, one of which I was accepted to. I loved the program, but I don't want to accept until I at least go to the interview for the second (there's a chance I won't like it and then I'll accept the first immediately, but there's always the chance I'll love it too). Problem is, there's at least two weeks between my initial offer for School 1 and the interview for School 2, and then who knows how long until I hear back about acceptance/waitlist/rejection. I feel awful just holding onto this offer for literally weeks, because I want them to know how much I loved it there and am really considering accepting. How much do you tell the school in terms of why you haven't accepted yet? I'm sure they get the process and all, and I'll let them know asap, but it just seems like such a long time.... Do they get this a lot? Does it look bad to hold it so long?

Also, I did get interviews two other places that I wasn't very excited about: one I cancelled the interview since it was after I heard from School 1, and the other I had already been but would decline asap if accepted. So I am trying to be mindful of not holding spots I am not interested in.

I got an interview for Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Does anyone know how many people were invited and how many acceptance spots they have? Just want to know how much of a chance I have

I got an interview there as well, congrats :) Looking at previous years it seems like they invite about 60-80 and accept half that, which from what I understand is a pretty good shot as far as odds go compared to other schools!

Any chance you're comfortable PMing me POI? I'm really interested in this program! Congrats :)

I don't know if this will help but, I received an email from the actual department from one of the schools I applied to and it also did not specify the POI. When I spoke with the graduate student that is hosting me while I am there she told me that I would be interviewing with all of the faculty and not just the ones I listed as POI..... She told me to be familiar with all of the faculty but especially those I am interested in working under. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I will definitely brush up on all faculty research then, just a little more with my POI.

(And yay I figured out how to reply to a comment on mobile) ??‍♀️

  14. Wondering if this is standard... I got an email today inviting me to interview (woohoo!) from the DCT but it doesn't specify a POI. The only other interview I've gotten was directly from my POI. Should I assume I'm interviewing with POI I specified in my statement? I'd like to be prepared by reading their research etc

  15. I think it really depends on the program and individual professor you are applying to. I applied to clinical programs pre- and post- masters, did not get in either time (presumed at this point this year). I think that although a masters is helpful, my impression is that research experience is really the biggest piece (at least for clinical). Unfortunately, while completing my masters I did not have the opportunity to make the most of the research opportunities provided to me because I was also working full time in a clinical position in order to support myself (gotta pay the rent!). So as long as you make your masters worth it, it can be a great thing! But if you're just doing it to write a degree on your CV, it's probably not going to be helpful.

And just for reference, I applied this year after graduating with my masters in clinical psych in December. No interviews :( I have 3.85 masters  GPA, 152 V 162 Q GRE, 3+ yrs inpatient psych clinical experience at a top hospital in the US, 1 yr undergrad research experience and .5 yr post grad research experience. No publications, 1 poster (This is where I'm lacking)
