  1. Uncertain as to whether they've sent out all notifications. He only mentioned they admitted 20 out of 220 or so and have a very small wait list of a few applicants. 3.96 undergrad GPA; 166 verbal, 162 quant, 5.0 writing.
  2. I haven't seen anyone claim an acceptance there on this thread yet, though I'm the wait list from earlier today on the results page.
  3. When I wrote my GRE, I used the first three minutes of each prompt to brainstorm. No writing, just thinking. I felt that helped me come up with a well-designed plan of attack, and ultimately helped me score well on it.
  4. I'm uncertain. I got an e-mail this morning that said to check the website, which contained a rejection letter. I believe acceptances were already sent out to everyone, though I'm not entire certain. That's just speculation.
  5. The essay is quite short. A solid, fully-developed essay for the GRE is 500+ words. I would really focus on developing your points more fully. I see one point for your argument and one counterpoint. Shoot for at least two premises in support of your thesis, if not three. Focusing on breadth and details will help improve the quality of the response greatly.
  6. Does anyone know the status of UNC reporting admissions decisions? I still haven't heard anything, and the online webpage says "submitted."
  7. Has anyone else that got an e-mail for a phone interview from Indiana heard back from the DGS about a specific time when he will call?
  8. I'll take a look at it if you'd like.
  9. I don't believe the UT-Austin app status page isn't being updated. I received an offer of admission from them 9 days ago and it still says "under review" on mine as well. Edit: As far as the reasoning for not notifying rejections at the same time as acceptances, your guess is as good as mine.
  10. Negative. Don't believe they've been sent out yet.
  11. Everyone operates and thinks differently, so take this advice with a grain of a salt- spend a decent amount of time (I allotted three minutes on test day) just sitting there reading the information given. Don't feel the need to rush into typing; once you get comfortable, 30 minutes will seem like a lifetime. Indeed, my argument analysis response on the GRE was probably over 600 words. Second, really try to focus on the big picture of the argument. Identify: 1) What fundamental pieces of information make this argument logically coherent and 2) The assumptions upon which the argument relies. On point number 2, even if the prompt doesn't specifically tell you to identify the assumptions, you're still going to want to find them. Why? Well, for example, the easiest way to weaken an argument is to negate the assumption. Conversely, the easiest way to strengthen the argument is to affirm the assumption. In short, ID assumptions. Next, find the link between the assumptions and the conclusion, being sure to not fall into the trap of intermediary conclusions [if you want me to explain this part a little more, feel free to PM me. Getting kind of late ] Here, I see a few: A) There are no significant changes (e.g. cultural childrearing patterns) that occurred between 20 YA and Dr. Karp's recent research. Vocalization regarding biological parents is indicative of the childrearing habits of a culture. C) The big one- generalizability. Even if we grant that Dr. Field's research was spurious, it does not necessarily mean that his methodologies are flawed. As I mentioned above, feel free to PM with any questions. I'd be happy to discuss
  12. The Economist was one of my "go to" sources for challenging reading material. Also, as you mentioned, keeping abreast of recent happenings is great.
  13. I probably wouldn't worry much at all about it. We're still quite early in the admissions reporting cycle.
  14. Thanks, it definitely is a big relief
  15. Yes, I received an offer of admission from Texas on Friday without an interview. As @anna_m pointed out, many universities don't interview
  16. Exactly this. Pretty much exactly what one of my professors (and LOR writer) told me. Don't want to have to look back and wonder what could have been.
  17. My two cents: 1) Study vocabulary. A huge portion of your verbal score hinges on this. That being said, it's important to understand both denotative and connotative definitions of the words you're studying. I think I went through about 1500 vocabulary words during my prep. 2) If you're trying to break into the upper echelon of scores (165+), I highly recommend studying reading comprehension and paragraph argument questions from LSAT study materials. The LSAT has more types of paragraph argument questions (they call them logical reasoning). I would especially focus on LSAT flaw, strengthen, and weaken LR questions. By and large, these are pretty identical to the few paragraph arguments you'll see on the GRE, but more difficult. I definitely believe my LSAT prep (I was a law school aspirant prior to deciding on pursuing a PhD) was a huge factor in preparing me well for the verbal section of the GRE. 3) Reading challenging material is a sure fire way to help you improve on the reading comprehension portions of the verbal section. 4) Dedicate time. Improving a verbal score greatly takes a lot of effort. But it most definitely pays off.
  18. Thankfully my e-mail pushes to my cell, so I just get notified when I get one instead of having to refresh. The anxiety definitely lingers in the back of my mind though. Hopefully more decisions start coming in soon. Best of luck to you this admissions season! To where did you apply?
  19. Indeed. Long-time lurker who has decided to come out of the shadows. Thank you for the warm welcome.
  20. Lots of golf and snowboarding. And some reading.
  21. Work/occupations, organizations, and inequality.
  22. I received an offer of admission to UT- Austin today which included funding information. Schools are different; I'm sure that you'll be forwarded funding info shortly. Congrats on your acceptance to OSU! To all: feel free to PM with any questions!
