IN AT GEORGETOWN!!!!! I AM SO HAPPY!!!! THERE IS HOPE FOR ALL OF YOU WHO THINK THEY'RE NOT DONE ADMITTING WOO HOO!!!!!1!!!!1!!!!
-
What's going on with Georgetown? So far, three acceptances, each spaced two days apart, and none of them claimed.
-
Georgetown accepted 92 people last year. Not saying they all post acceptances on this website, but two unclaimed acceptances seems a bit low to conclude that they are finished admitting students.
-
Chicago is still deciding on who to accept to their MA programs. If you haven't heard from them yet, you've been rejected from the PhD program.
-
Outside of HYP, you'd be better off at a lot of non-Ivy PhD programs for PT anyway. Columbia is a top-15, maybe top-10 program, but Brown, Penn and Cornell aren't terribly strong in theory. Toronto is a very good program for theory, and I'd definitely take a funded offer from Toronto over unfunded admission to Oxford or Cambridge. Also, I would DEFINITELY take the PhD at Wisconsin over the MA at Yale if I were in comparative politics.

There was a discussion about the Columbia status problem on the Fall 2010 Admissions Results thread. Quite a few people also had their status listed as "incomplete" from what I recall; it's just a glitch in the system, and it doesn't seem to imply that your application was not received and considered. So I wouldn't worry about it too much, though unfortunately if you haven't heard from Columbia yet you're likely rejected.

They do cover tuition and fees, so you can always work 20 hr/week in a coffee shop instead of spending the same time grading papers.

I'm also anxiously awaiting my decision. Admissions data from last year is available on their website: http://government.ge...edu/57323.html. They accepted under 10% in IR last year and funded 2 of the 7 who enrolled (Not sure if that's what you wanted to hear!) My opinion of Gtown is that they seem a bit underrated in the US News rankings (35-40, but Hix has them at 16 as of about 10 years ago and they've gotten better since then). It seems like the faculty is very strong, but they admit (and don't fund) a lot of students, which dilutes the "prestige" of the program, and it also seems like a lot of grads go into policy rather than academia, thus weakening their placement statistics. While I'm obviously a bit biased since it's one of the few departments that hasn't rejected me yet, I believe that Gtown is a fairly strong department (10-15) in theory, and also very strong in IR.

Unless you really want to work with Cohen, I wouldn't apply to Stanford for theory. I wrote my undergrad thesis on Rawls, and I still didn't consider Stanford. Their department is more of a hodgepodge of theory-related people than a "true" theory department: Cohen is a (very good) philosopher, Ober is a (very good) classicist, and then there are some formal theory people thrown in the mix. I'm really not sure how Stanford ends up ranked in PT (top 10-17 US News) other than that non-theorists surveyed by US News rank it too high due to the overall strength of the department. That said, I'm getting rejected pretty much everywhere, and if I were to reapply again, Stanford would possibly be on my list. Theory has been ridiculously competitive this year (I graduated with departmental honors from a top-10 LAC with a 1500+ GRE and I may be out of luck). My advice would be to apply to Stanford only if you think you won't have a shot at a top-10 program. I wouldn't apply as a safety either, because I doubt they intend to enroll more than 2-3 theorists a year, and I'm sure there are some applicants who are lured by the overall prestige of Stanford, not to mention the prospect of living in Palo Alto on a $30,000/year stipend. But if you are shooting for the top 10-20 programs, I'd throw Stanford in the mix with UVA, Georgetown, Toronto etc.

There is also another acceptance listed on the results page, and only three people posted acceptances last year. But I agree; I think there will be a few more acceptances, though one theory acceptance has already been claimed.
-
I'm pretty anxious to hear from Johns Hopkins. I also think that UCLA will send out more offers for theory, though I'm guessing that funding will be contingent on whether or not those offered spots on Saturday accept or decline their offers (judging from last year's results).
-
Anyone claiming the UCLA acceptance?
-
looks like harvard rejections are out! haven't got mine yet, but i'm eagerly anticipating it unless of course our old friend is sending out fake rejections to give the rest of us false hope... edit: they're definitely fake
-
I guess they're still deciding on who to wait-list? Did any theory folks claim Princeton acceptances yet?
-
I think a few of us applied to both Princeton and Northwestern. The theory market is pretty tight, so I think most of us are willing to sacrifice fit for a chance at a job. It's not like writing an undergrad thesis on Rawls limits me to studying analytic political philosophy as a grad student, even if it leads me to not consider some schools, like Berkeley.
-
Backstreets, are you applying for political theory? I graduated with honors from a top-10 LAC with an 800Q/710V GRE, excellent recommendations and a writing sample which I could probably get published if I tried. I've also been presumably rejected from all 6 schools I have heard back from. So it's not just you. Theory is very competitive (philosophy is even worse), but UVA and Texas are both excellent programs which will give you opportunities for good placement.
-
From last year's reported UCLA results: 14 accepted (5 waitlisted for funding, 1 admitted off waitlist) 9 rejected 5 waitlisted not bad odds for a top program...stay hopeful!
-
readeatsleep claimed a ND acceptance today, so that makes 2 acceptances. Not sure if that means they're done or not; guess we'll find out soon enough. I am stressed out of my mind right now. I didn't really apply to a safety, and I'm getting rocked, though I think I have a good shot at Georgetown (funding there is a whole different matter). It also looks like UCLA admitted a large number of students last year but didn't fund all of them. Though if I'm not working as a TA, I guess I could cover living expenses working at a grocery store or something.

lol, she's still alive and well, just changed her name
-
we're not going to tell you, for your own good
-
looks like a prank to me. harvard isn't going to admit only 9 students, even in a year when their endowment falls to $25 billion

utilitarianism

don't feed the trolls

Generally, this seems to be true, but Georgetown is building a reputation as a solid political theory program, hiring Patrick Deneen in 2005 and Richard Boyd in 2007. While a career-minded PhD candidate might be turned off by Georgetown's placement history, I would not be surprised if Georgetown ranks among the "top 10" theory programs by the end of the decade. One would think that Georgetown/GW/American would be stronger in American politics, given their location, and that Georgetown's excellent School of Foreign Service would lead to an equally strong graduate program in IR.
