  1. Hi Tim!

Glad you started this thread. I'm joining Luskin's social welfare program through the combined MSW/PhD track. Most my work will be focused on the prevention and intervention of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, and critiques of cultural attitudes and medicalization of mental health.

I just had an opportunity this Monday to visit for a welcome day and I'm really thrilled to be in such an interdisciplinary setting. I'm from Michigan and also can't wait to be studying outdoors year round (:

    Congrats to you too!

  2. What I've heard is that the reason applicants hear back at different times is that some schools use two rounds of decisions, rather than wait listing straight off.  They make offers to their best fit or most desired candidates in January or early February (rejecting the folks they know they don't want), wait a few weeks to hear back from the students they offered to, and then make second round offers in March based on the yield from the first round.

I talked to the admissions person at UCLA and I know that this is true. For some reason Berkeley is not having a waitlist this year though, idk why?

  3. I got an email today from the chair of doctoral studies that she wants to talk to me Monday morning. I don't know how to interpret this. She said she wanted to update me on my application and the review process, so idk. I guess I'm very happy I'll have a better idea of what's up soon.... Fingers crossed!!

  4. The struggle is real.

I'm still waiting on two.  One wasn't due until late January so it's to be expected but December 1st?  That seems ridiculous.  There's an irrational part of me that thinks I'll jinx it if I get in touch with them to find out where they are in the process.

Also I think that contacting them is totally appropriate and shows that you're very much interested in their program!!

  5. I'm applying to the PhD program as well, and have yet to hear anything. After several increasingly desperate calls to Mr. Fooks, I finally emailed him and received a response within literally a few minutes. He said "Decisions are still forthcoming. The admissions process is coming to a close. You will hear soon." Sounds pretty ominous, but at least the window is still open. Best of luck!

Oh my god I can't handle this pressure. Thanks for the update!

  6. I applied to their MSW/PhD program. Haven't heard a peep, though I'm assuming I'll have to hear back in the next week because if I don't get in, it'll be passed on to the MSW committee. I did visit last week to see a friend and I absolutely fell in love with the faculty and campus. Fingers crossed!
