I am just going to apply again next year, too. Maybe 3rd time is a charm? I'm trying to fight feeling disappointed and defeated.

@SarahsSeoulSearch Hey Sarah, I heard from someone who is in my program (but a year ahead of me) who has Boren now that they are really flexible once you get it, so I wouldn't worry about details unless you were dramatically changing everything (like the language or something). We are finding out about the results very soon, so if I were you I would wait to buy the airfare.

Thought this would be helpful. I asked about the budget (I am a Fellowship applicant) and the notification date and received this answer: We sent out one massive budget update request to everyone and now and then we need to correct something we notice as we go through each applicant. Not all applicants will get a second budget email, especially if they didn’t have any anomalies. It doesn’t indicate you are or are not still in the running. We will announce the week of the 18th. Regards, Michael

Tomorrow starts the 1 in 5 chance we will get an email! It is coming this week, guys. And every day of not getting the email the odds get greater that we will get it the next day.

Like I said before, the office told me that we would hear the 3rd week in April. That means it will be anywhere from April 12 - April 18. 8-14 more days of nerve-wracking wait!

For me it's just that I have so much invested in this country (Korea). I lived there for 4 years and have close relationships with Korean people. My boyfriend is also Korean. I'm really passionate and knowledgable about the culture and want to educate more foreigners about it. I have already put a lot of time, money, and effort into the language but because of my full time work schedule while I lived there, it wasn't possible to devote enough time I needed to become as proficient as I want to be. Also I believe that people really need to be more educated about the peninsula because it plays such a huge huge role in geopolitics and global security.

I feel proud that I started this thread! As I said before, I put my heart and soul into this application and truly put in 110% effort. My project also has to do with international education which is what IIE is in the first place. Having said that, I have a lot of confidence and high hopes in this. So I'm scared of not getting it because it will be a huge huge bummer for me. Like someone said before, we have an 80% chance of not winning, but for me I'm like "well I'm totally gonna be in that 20% because my app is awesome!" But I'm trying to keep my expectations low so I don't end up getting super crushed if I don't get it. Sigh.

The guy in the office told me that we would hear from them the 3rd week in April. I'm traveling in Africa now without good connection so I probably won't be on this forum much until then. The second half of this year remains a mystery for me, though, which is nerve-wracking. I just got a notification of my financial aid disbursement (I'll be a new grad student in the fall) and if I get the Boren I will probably have to do the online program. So I don't even know if I'll be an on campus student or an online student yet.

Mina, some of us received the budget email already. We are suspecting that it has no indication whether or not we receive the fellowship. Thanks for making the spreadsheet!

Chiri, what country/language did you apply for? I worked super hard on mine as well. Relentless editing and requests for others to edit. It was an obsession. Just know that if you don't get it, you tried your absolute best. That's what I'm telling myself.

You just beat me to it. I just received the email now and got a little excited. I read that whole thread from last year or two years ago when everyone was agonizing about it. I guess we still don't know if it means anything or not, but from what I can remember, only one person on the forum who didn't get the budget email ended up getting the scholarship/fellowship. But that's not representative of the whole pool of applicants. Best just to be patient and not think about the email, I guess.

Oh my god, I know! I just looked at the date and thought "It's ONLY been 11 DAYS?!" This wait is going to kill me. I want to be fluent in Korean so badly even if my Korean s/o refuses to speak to me in Korean and only wants to use English, hahaha. I will force him to use Korean with me! If you want to gripe about the wait with me, you can message me on What's App What country/language did you apply for?
