  1. Dang, thats cool! Bummer it didnt work out.
  2. Thanks! Ah, I see. That's what I really like about the whole British-style PhD system. No coursework to distract from what's really important.
  3. That's awesome! Congrats on the admit and good luck with that. Do those MA and PhD programs require coursework or is it purely research based? I was pleasantly surprised to find that the PhD programs at U of Auckland dont require any courses.
  4. Thought the Americans that have gone international for graduate school deserve a designated thread. Searching through IHOG for others in this demographic and instead finding old, dead threads is a drag. J ust say a little about yourself (where you're from, academic history, etc.), where you're studying (or working) and what program you're in, and how you're finding life outside the States. I'm from Fayetteville Arkansas and I'll graduate from the University of Arkansas in May with a BS (with Honors) in Biomedical Engineering. Currently settling up my PhD application to the University of Auckland in New Zealand; was interviewed and offered a PhD scholarship (contingent on my acceptance to the University) a few weeks ago, and my advisor and I just have to finish up my provisional thesis proposal to complete the app. Already pre-approved for study, so it's just a matter of formality. Let's get this started! -Ethan
  5. That's nice to hear, thanks for the positivity. What programs are you trying to get into over here?
  6. Hey everybody! Just wondering if anyone else on here goes to a NZ university. Searched around a bit and couldn't find a thread dedicated to this. About me: About to graduate from the University of Arkansas with a BS (Honors) in Biomedical Engineering. Studied abroad in NZ for 6 months in 2013, 1.5 years of lab experience, 2 publications in the pipeline (with two associated patents, but I won't be anywhere near the primary holder), and a 3.71/4.0 GPA. Applied for a funded PhD position (with a general project description) through Seek, a random job website, and provided supplementary docs (recs, etc.). One of the PI's in the research group asked for an interview and I received an email a couple weeks later with the offer contingent only on my acceptance to the University. Currently finishing up my PhD application (for Molecular Medicine) to the University of Auckland to start semester 2, 2015 (mid-July). I've been unofficially approved for study, but my advisor/PI and I have to finish up writing up my preliminary thesis proposal and a letter that details the structure of my advisory committee. Should know the results of all of this in the next week or two. Anyway, enough about me. Post up! -Ethan
