  1. Just out of curiosity, has anyone gotten a notification from a coordinator about this yet? I'm curious what terms they put it in.
  2. I think it's pretty clear: our priorities involve blowing up people in other countries, not trying to understand and get along with them.
  3. Yeah, I realize not everyone has the luxury of having anything saved and I shouldn't whine about it. But it took a long time to save all that. ;-)
  4. If I could at least check my email on a regular basis this would make me feel slightly less insane. I basically went ahead and made plans. In the worst case I'll spend all my savings. Which sucks, because it would've been nice to graduate with a few thousand dollars squirreled away ... or, you know, to move back to the US with a few thousand bucks to get me through that last year or two. But we can't have everything.
  5. Feel you there. I'm currently out of the country in a first research phase and need to commit to how long I'll be here and exactly when I'll go back to the US to deal with university administrative stuff and see parents (not in the same city, either). (I can't even check my email consistently, so ... gulp.) We're all in the same boat. So much good luck and sympathy to you - going through major life changes is sucky at the best of times, and when you're trying to make decisions contingent on information you don't have ... argh. Can you sublet for a month to buy some time? Hugs all around, and good luck all around.
  6. Sorry is the last thing you should be. Thank goodness someone is an optimist around here!
  7. Email from university coordinator. No idea about requirements.
  8. Apparently we got notified just about last of almost anyone, although that's probably the school's administration's fault - my email from last year is dated May 7.
  9. Last year's was the first week of May, so don't hold your breath yet. ;-) Good luck!
  10. Seconding the round of congrats. Still have heard nothing, although a colleague in my department got a rejection an hour ago. I've been assuming I was rejected anyway.
  11. Time zone? =) Congratulations. (Sigh.)
  12. Still no news. Slowly going insane. But as I'm on the West Coast and our work day starts a bit later...looks like I just have to stay twitchy for a few more hours and stop succumbing to the feeling that no news is bad news.
  13. I know it doesn't feel like it right this sec, but congratulations.
  14. Possible bad news: one of my colleagues got notified about an anthro NSF a few days ago. (I didn't apply, so this one is low-stress for me.) Possible good news: they wait to do the rejections because if people turn them down, they move down the list to the top-level alternates. Fingers crossed.
  15. Continuing lack of info here: http://www.poliscijobrumors.com/topic.php?id=21167&replies=7#post-137420 What I have gleaned from those folks and their (equal) ignorance is that both SSRC and Fulbright-Hays notified by this time last year, both should be out by about May 1st, and if you got an NSF you would already know. Hope this is of some sort of use.
  16. <br /><br /><br /> There are banks absolutely everywhere. Most campuses will have a few options. Many major banks don't charge a fee on debit card transactions. Check into this -- read the small print. However, no US bank will charge you to get cash out of your account (as far as I know), so that's easy enough.
  17. <br /><br /><br /> Nothing, but I *did* mail my taxes...
  18. <br /><br /><br /> Usually, although not always, a scholarship or grant will have two parts: a. fee/tuition remission -- they pay your fees to the school so you don't have to. you will never actually see this money, but you won't have to spend it, either. b. a stipend -- money to live on. this is taxable most places. On many campuses, academic jobs like TAships and RAships have tuition remission as a standard benefit if you work more than some standard amount of hours. At my university, there's something called the Chancellor's Prize which is a named scholarship. I don't know where you are, but it's probably not any different from this. Don't worry about what it's called. =)
  19. @4greenbananas: Someone I know got a revise-and-resubmit with a week to go last year. Shudder.
  20. <br /><br /><br /> No, I don't, but someone said in this thread way up above that people found out April 15th last year...
  21. With a week to go, the Jeopardy theme song is playing in my head. Anyone? Anything?
  22. In no particular order: Quite a few schools require them for internal aid even if you're not requesting/getting federal aid, and they may have a deadline well before the federal date. Check with your school -- I think this is pretty common. Even federal aid info comes from your school rather than a centralized place, I believe. Also, assuming you fit their criteria for financial independence, don't bother to fill out your parents' info.
  23. I am getting my nervous on today. Do we get some news sometime ever? =)

    cost of living

Look up cost-of-living calculators on google. Here's a few to get you started: http://www.bestplaces.net/COL/default.aspx http://www.bankrate.com/calculators/savings/moving-cost-of-living-calculator.aspx more comprehensive but slightly confusing They only let you put in one salary so you'll have to play with it a bit, but these and any others you find will give you a much better idea of what your money really looks like. For example, I was choosing between $21k in Los Angeles and $14k in Austin. These amount to almost exactly the same amount of money! (Although I ended up in Los Angeles for other reasons...)
