  1. Read some academic journals.  Get your hands on four or five (from a mentor) and identify the articles that interest you.  Look at 1) what the authors are studying  2) where they earned their PhD and 3) who they are citing.  This information should inform where you want to study (also, reading academic writing will elevate your SOP).

Regarding your SOP: introduce a research topic that demonstrates your general interests, and expand these interests into what you want to study in graduate school.  Be focused in your writing, as you only have 4 pages.

  2. I've been staying away from this board for a while, for my nerves.  Anyway, congrats to all the admits, hope everyone is doing well!

If there are any Michigan admits out there (Methods sub-field), who are planning to turn down the offer...please please please do so soon!

I am on the wait-list at my dream school and am pumping out positive energy, hoping for something back.

  3. Americanists accepted at Michigan: it is a cold and terrible place. If you believe Poli Sci Rumors, the department is run by qualitative scholars. You have better offers elsewhere!

    ¬_¬

Yeah, I've heard that the department is on the decline...also, it gets sticky there in the summer, really hot and sweaty.  And mosquitos.  And the beer isn't THAT good in Ann Arbor.

    ...shit.

  4. ***we interrupt this Ivy League program to inform you that Bubandis has received an admission offer from the University of Nebraska. We now return to your scheduled Ivy League programing***

Atta kid, Bubandis!  Go get yourself some cheeseburgers, as a reward!

Congrats to all the admits.  To those waiting to hear good news: cling to that hope, and know that academia is within reach for us.

  5. I've called Michigan and have more info on the wait list.

The graduate program coordinator said they shoot for a specific cohort size and the wait list is ranked by subfield. Generally, they pick people off the wait list if others in the subfield accept other offers. They said they typically know more around the last week of March after the admitted students visit.

And, no, they don't tell you where you rank. :)

Alright, so now the question is: who has been accepted to Michigan with a focus in Methods?

  6. I'm also waitlisted at Michigan. I'll take it! If people get better offers please consider bowing out as soon as you make a decision!

Congrats to everyone who got Princeton today!

Seriously though.  I am on two waitlists (Davis and Michigan) with two rejections (UCSD and Northwestern).  Please...for the sake of my sanity...if you receive a better offer somewhere else, please tell Michigan ASAP.
