Honestly, if they are registered here, they are probably out celebrating. I would be. Besides, I doubt most of their fall cohort slums around on discussion forums (no offense meant, given my presence).

And the interminable Harvard speculation concludes itself!

Advice from an actual PhD (redux)

Lol. I authored that post. -
I may have answered this already, but ahead of UMN and UNC, roughly even with OSU. Either OSU or UCSD would be excellent for your interests. Tiebreaker goes to location...

Quite right; I thought it was lower than it is. That is indeed a statistically significant difference. -

I think if your final two options end up between Notre Dame and Northwestern, the ranking difference is negligible. Remember standard errors when looking at rankings; the difference between 50 and 40 is about 0.4 points on 1-to-5 point scale. Given that, if you want good training in continental thought, I think Northwestern, Duke, or Social Thought are all excellent bets. I have lots of positive things to say about NW; Bonnie Honig is great and Mary Deitz has been placing students for decades. Decent interaction between Chicago and NW too, so there's that -- Patchen Markell could be an outside committee member. -
I didn't apply, nor am I comparative, so you don't have to worry about me.

Yes, it would be interesting to know if Notre Dame is done; I predict they'll meet this week one more time, and then c'est fini (I was told a final decision would be distributed to me by month's end). My sense, based on past years' results, is that Columbia is done accepting.

Well curufinwe, if the dept. gets a bit over 100 applicants, that means maybe 25 applied to each of the four subfields, rendering your chances a bit better. However, Scarlet might have better info on how the subfield application numbers break down.
-
No where better than OSU for your interests.
-
Disturbing. You received an acceptance, and are re-applying this year? What does that say about the department?
-
I would rank Brandeis slightly above CUNY, and, depending on your interests, in striking distance of Brown. If you are sent an acceptance, it could be a game change.
-
curufinwe, I have a hunch Brandeis might disclose their decisions this week. How much is Brandeis a bellwether for you?
-
Harvard University, I suspect that since many other admit "lines" to the govt. dept. opened last week, this week will bring the final govt. dept. decisions. On a related note, we will see if user "SuddenlyParanoid" becomes the Michael Phelps of graduate school admissions (and no, I don't mean the pothead, arrested for drunk driving version).
-
Key to this is that just because someone "declines" doesn't mean you move up a slot. One needs many fellows to reject offers in order for the phones to start ringing.
-
It's time for another week of decisions.

Interesting insight, I know a few UChicago wait listers are perceiving that as a weekend of bloodsport. I think you are right that such an approach would make anyone uncomfortable. This is not "A Shot at Love". More broadly, it would be interesting to know how wise it is to try to advance yourself while on a WL. For example, would sending an updated CV/writing sample, or contacting faculty, be prudent?
-
Beginning to think they didn't "take" anybody. FWIW, I started this thread and was rejected back in January (something I said?).
-
Perhaps, but really who can blame them -- the roar of the ocean has a lulling effect on running regressions.

Now, let me ask you this, APGradApplicant: do you feel better in your skin now that you have this knowledge, or do you wish you were still in the dark, with hope flickering across the nighttime sky.

I emailed the DGS a few weeks ago and he said the committee would meet at the end of this month. A new cohort seems a go.

Anyone call Notre Dame about the supposed email acceptance?
