Hi kristenflowers, if you're asking about how to apply for positions outside of your home department, the following advice might be useful.

If you haven't already, visit the website of the department you're interested in and see if they have any information. If there are existing opportunities, you may be able to find details about what they entail, how to apply, the compensation, etc. You can then e-mail the contact person (if listed) and inquire as to whether applicants from outside departments would be considered. If you don't find the info you're looking for, e-mail the head of the department.

In either case, introduce yourself and state the reason for which you are contacting him/her. Briefly describe your background/qualifications, and make it clear why you are interested in working for the department in question, and in what kind of position you are interested (e.g., research assistant, teaching assistant, tutor, etc.). It would be good to attach an updated and relevant resume, and just thank them for their time and consideration.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

    Thanks so much!

  2. I hope this isn't a stupid question, but is Loma Linda primarily geared towards students wishing to enter the medical side of the Profession. I know they have the Medical Center and their description of their program talks quite a bit about swallowing disorders.

I tried to find a degree requirements list of the courses to see if I could also take classes on Autism or Literacy etc. but didn't have any luck. I'm going on a tour in a week and didn't want to sound uninformed if most people already know their program to be highly medically focused.

Are my impressions, based on the website, correct or could someone interested in working in schools or with kids still find a good fit at Loma Linda?

    Thanks!

I'm starting Loma Linda this fall and don't get the impression that it's just medical based. You do clinicals in 5 different settings to get a full feel of what you would like to do. I personally do not have an interest in working at a hospital or in a medical setting but know this is still going to be a great school for me even though I plan to work with children in a school. They're very willing to answer all questions and are super helpful.

    Good luck!

  3. What state are you in? I'm also terrified of the GRE because of how tough and tedious it is. I'm in california and found some schools that don't require it- CSUF, CSUSM and Loma Linda University (where I was just accepted!)

    So there is hope!

Also, I heard many time that the GRE is not your final say in grad school. It's worth a try to study and take it, once you get it over with I'm sure you'll feel relieved.

  4. Thanks for responding! I would actually be in the transitional masters program if i were accepted which for the first year is an extra $30,000...so roughly $70,000 (idk if I want that much debt smh lol) by the end of three years. I'm glad that your friend loves the program! This is one of my top choices

this is late, but did you end up going to Loma Linda for the transitional masters? I was just accepted and I'm so excited, but I'm also worried about the cost. Do you feel it was worth it?

And what was your schedule like? I'm curious if I will be able to have a job during that first year.

    Thanks!

  5. Hey guys! I got an interview on April 13th for the Transitional Masters CSD! Can you guys kinda tell me what to expect? Like what kind of questions they might ask? And what to expect for the essay also?

I know this is old news, but did you get accepted into the transitional masters?

I was just accepted and I'm so curious what the program will be like- but mostly I'm curious to know if I'll be able to work during the first year.

Any and all information is so helpful! Thanks!

  6. I've also been accepted to CSUF's postbacc! On a side note, do you know when the deadline is to accept the offer?

I'm still waiting on CSULA so would like to have my options open and not have to pay a $250 deposit.

I just got my acceptance to csuf post bac as well- you have two weeks from the day your letter is posted to accept. I contacted CSULA and they said "applications are being reviewed" right now, who knows how long that will take.

I've also heard that csuf is very compacted and takes more than one year to finish BUT that they favor their own students more than chapman might. My friend did chapman's post bac and was accepted to their graduate. She loved it! But it pretty much consumed her life.

Best of luck in whatever you both decide!

  7. I received my acceptance for the post bacc at CSUF on April 24th. Also waiting on CSULA which is my first choice.

Also applied to USU but completely irrelevant now that I have an in classroom program acceptance.

Congrats on being accepted! If you don't mind me asking: did you get a letter in the mail, an email, etc?

I applied and never received anything so I assumed I wasn't accepted. But this morning I received an email for a mandatory meeting for newly accepted students. I'm so confused if I'm accepted or not!

  8. I applied to USU but haven't gotten a single email. They didn't even ask for my application payment. I went on their site and it says the app was submitted. I'm not sure if I screwed that up or what.

Wait I thought you had to apply as a non-degree seeking student for the post-bacc?

From my understanding you can apply as a non-degree seeking student or go for your second bachelor's with USU. If I'm not mistaken, you can get financial aid only if you're applying for your second degree

  9. USU online has a June 1st deadline for the fall but if you miss that, you can take your 1st semester as a non-degree student while waiting for your acceptance. I'm taking a couple courses this summer (starts May 11th) as a non-degree student and have an application pending for the fall.

Thanks! That's great to know that I still have a solid back up in case I'm not getting accepted anywhere else. I've heard the USU program is great, I'm just nervous about taking online classes. Let me know how you like it once you start, I'm really interested to hear more about it!

  10. I've read about every thread for acceptance into the Master's Program (and congrats to you all!), but I'm sitting on pins and needles here wondering if I'm ever going to hear back from any of the schools I applied to for my post bacc.

I applied to CSUF, CSULA and Loma Linda.
I'm thinking if I don't hear anything by mid May that I will apply to USU if I'm not too late. But I truly prefer a classroom setting because I just learn better this way.

Has anyone received acceptances? Rejections? Anything from schools you've applied to? I would love to hear from you!
