Hello nice people! My friend just told me about this forum, very cool and helpful :)

I've been accepted to Mississippi for fiction with full funding/teaching job thing, Sarah Lawrence with symbolic funding but not nearly enough for me to afford it... apart from that,I've applied to NYU and the New School and heard nothing from either. I am a fiction writer, by the way. good luck to everyone here :)

Congratulations, Red_Comet! I'm wondering. Do you have any idea, perhaps, if all the acceptances/if any waitlists have gone out! I know me, as well as some other GradCafe goers, are in Miss. Phase II purgatory—and we are eagerly awaiting even slightest bit of info!

Thank you! I am, I'm genuinely really, really proud of myself. Also an unfamiliar feeling!

Institutional validation should not mean everything, but whew, it meant a lot to me this weekend.

It's funny because I think I'd rather live in Vegas than Ames? I'm Jewish and gay, and worry that a small town in a conservative state may not be the best place for me. And I loooove the easy access to every gorgeous national park ever. Ames scares me a bit, I've lived in a more rural place (my small town in Malaysia) and I know I am not more productive when I'm bored, I'm just bored. BUT the possibility of interdisciplinary work from ISU is super exciting!

And, on top of that, the programs themselves (ISU has an environmental bent, UNLV has an international one) are so different that I don't know how to weigh it! Which do I care about more, travel or nature?! AHHHH!

Congrats! Just to put my two cents in here: I think you should choose Las Vegas. Of course both are wonderful options. Iowa could be very isolating—where would you go if you wanted to have a weekend away somewhere—whereas being in Nevada will offer great weather, lots of opportunity to travel, etc. Also, I would have a distinct hunch that Las Vegas might have a lot more to offer than meets the eye.

While we're on this subject, I have a related question about MFA interviews. I received 2 interview invites this week for schools where I feel unlikely to accept because I have a better-funded offer on the table. My impulse is to take the interview anyway because you just never know, and if anything it's just good practice for other academic or work opportunities in the future. What would you all do? Am I being unethical and wasting everyone's time?

Hmm, I think you should absolutely do the interviews! Good practice, and also good to see what they have to say. Do you mind me asking where?!

Anyone have any info regarding the Mississippi notifications that were made today? I see both E-mail (poetry) and phone (fiction) acceptances have gone out.  Any idea if all notifications have been made or if they'll be parceled out over time? I reeeaaalllyyy want to go to Ole Miss so any info will be greatly appreciated.

I am also curious about this. Anyone heard anything?

    Hello! Congrats on Phase II!

I also made it to that. I've noticed a lot of people didn't, which indicates that it is good news and not just a thing that happens to most applicants. I've tried to figure out how many people make it to Phase II before being ultimately rejected, and I haven't seen much (it seeeems like most people are WLed or accepted from Phase II), but I don't actually trust the data bc it's sparse and people underreport their rejections.

If you hear anything, please report back! I am at the edge of my seat about Ole Miss.

Thanks, Aheather. Congrats to you too! I'm hoping for the best for everyone!

  6. So has anyone finalized their decision yet? I am likely choosing Irivne, but still waiting to see what happens with the Johns Hopkins wait list.

  7. Any news on the FB Draft about Indiana or UC Irvine (poetry)? I saw on Gradcafe there was a rejection by email to Irvine which seemed strange, both because it came so early and by email, when in years past all rejections were by mail, and following the acceptances.

  8. For anyone still looking at the FB page: any word on poetry acceptances to Johns Hopkins? Saw some fiction ones on GradCafe. I am assuming they probably have gone out which is a little depressing. I don't know about other people but seeing my options whittling one-by-one is very upsetting! Especially because judging from past years my last two — Irvine and Indiana — won't be revealed for a good while.

  9. sandy bubbles: they say there are like seven other people but won't say which number I am and that the number they take off the WL can run anywhere from zero to three or four, depending on how many of the early offers accept

  10. Just heard word that I've been wait listed at Syracuse and am beginning to despair that I will turn up a goose egg. Does anyone have any advice for this situation? Would writing an email expressing my desire to go increase my chances?

Also, Theretheir—any idea if there are more Iowa poetry acceptances to come?

  11. How do you know all the fiction people found out?

I meant for Cornell. It seems like in past years they usually report all rejections on the same day and there were so many on the results page that's what I gathered.

  12. Were there a lot of Iowa poetry acceptances? I saw two on the results page here and felt a little despondent! I know I shouldn't get my hopes up too high. Also I am feeling confused about Cornell; I applied in poetry and haven't heard anything, which I assume means it's a no. I know all the fiction people have found out but does anyone have a guess as to what's happening there?

  13. Hi all,

I am new to the forum and feeling very tormented awaiting news. I am wondering if anyone might be able to provide a little more clarity about what's happening on the Facebook page. I applied in poetry and like many people am dreaming of Iowa! Have all the poetry notifications gone out to Iowa? Also any insight on the poetry situation at Cornell?

    Thanks!
