  1. ok. I was admitted to a PhD program in humanities by phone, letter and email. In the phone call and email, both from Dept. chair, they said they were happy to have me and explained my funding package. In the letter, same thing, only with the letter I got a copy of my admittance form from the dept. to the graduate school saying my admittance was conditional that I would finish my MA this May and send them my final transcript in July. I have not heard from the dept. chair that i need to do this, just saw it on the copy of the form that was sent to me. My graduating from my MA program in May, however, is not happening due to a lot of frustrating factors (an MIA advisor who tells me now that i should have waiting to apply to grad schools as "you have so much work on your thesis ahead of you" which would have been good to hear in SEPTEMBER when i submitted my draft). So what do i tell my PhD program? do i just not tell them anything? Do i wait to tell them in July after my advisor and I have met a few times and have some kind of idea when I'm going to be done with my MA? at this point i'm resigned to the fact that i'm going to have to travel back to my MA school and defend next fall. What am i obligated to tell my PhD program?? Should i tell them it's because of a problem with my advisor that i won't finish on time? My advisor explained to me last week that his recommendations suggested I couldn't finish my work, which is why i suspect I had the conditional admittance (and is pure evil he didn't talk to me WHILE i was applying to grad schools last fall). What do i do?
  2. you arent nannying for 3 yr old twins by chance, are you? i was a nanny for these kids in texas that moved back to Chicago and their mom said after me she would always look for a grad student from now on...(they also have a little sister). just a shot in the dark, if it were true that'd be great! i am also obsessively looking at CL and places to live-- i got accepted at Kansas so i've found some AMAZING places that are going fast which is more stressful to me than waiting for responses from schools!! i have the greatest housing situation ever right now (900 sq foot charming cottage in the woods of virginia) so finding an equally good living situation is paramount to my sanity. i also have to live alone with my 2 cats and NO shared bathrooms! i'm find that to be tricky to do cheaply... i NEED to be working on my Master's thesis and creating my powerpoint for 2 major presentations at conferences i have coming up (anyone going to St Louis end of March for PCA/ACA?) but instead im watching the Olympics in my pjs. progress?
  3. wants accept/rejects so i can find housing already! lets go people

  4. american studies here! i'm at w&m finishing up a master's and applied to 8 programs in either american studies, american culture studies, or cultural studies: george mason, bowling green, st louis u, and universities of michigan, iowa, texas, maryland, and kansas. I just got accepted to kansas (via website) no news on funding and nothing from any other schools. my interests are in popular culture and im writing my thesis on Mormonism in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight-- since it's a hot and sexy topic, i'm hoping that'll help my chances at a phd program. anyone else in at KU?
  5. William & Mary for a Master's in American Studies. turned down Purdue, UMassBoston, and got off the waitlist at UT Austin for Women's Studies. yay to be done! now does everyone have their housing and loans secure?
  6. I can't say much about the town as I haven't visited, but I'll be in the Amer. Studies program also. I've had a lot of great contacts in the dept. say that it's a nice town, the dept. pretty much gets along, and there's a lot of diversity in research topics. The town itself looks beautiful, and a lot of PhD people move to Richmond in the later years of their study to escape small town life. See you there?
  7. HELP! i have a question-- I have been waitlisted at UT women's studies and have no idea when they will tell me whether i got in or not (getting them to admit i was on the waitlist was like pulling teeth and the grad. coordinator still hasn't emailed me back). Is it rude to ask how long the waitlist is or if it's ranked? I already said UT ws was my top program and asked if they knew around what date I'd find out because I have other programs I have to notify. **MOST important question: should i try to schedule an interview with anyone in this dept., perhaps the dept chair?? thank you!

    Houston, TX

yes! as a longtime resident of Houston, i have many suggestions: visit Rice Village to shop. Go to the Montrose area (the "gayborhood" and, in my opinion, the best part of Houston) to eat and stroll around (eat at Empire Cafe, Brasil, Barnaby's, etc etc). You will always need a car in Houston. ALWAYS! So keep that in mind. Make sure you visit some of the museums in the Museum District (very close to Rice campus). I wouldn't go into actual Downtown Houston, and avoid the Galleria area (if anyone suggests you go there, don't bother). Enjoy!
  9. i actually am not attending any visiting days-- i can't take the time off from work (lame, i know). i found some helpful off campus resources: http://www.wm.edu/sharpefellowship/index.php it is old (from 2003) but still, a start. Also, there is a page on wm.edu called the CIU or something and there are posts for roommates, housing, etc (kind of like their own craigslist). Hope that helps!
  10. i'm working at my part time job still but taking 2 week vacations in May (nyc and boston), June (north carolina beach), and July(aspen) (all of these were planned over a year ago). then i'm moving in august and hoping that i can make it work with all loans!
  11. i was accepted (MA in american studies) but not totally positive i'm going. waiting on a TA application-- anyone else doing that?
  12. I have been accepted to both Purdue and William & Mary for a Master's in American Studies. I'm from Houston so I would like to live in a place that's not insanely cold (like my undergrad school in upstate NY) but is also a great community. Which has a better program? Any ideas? To further complicate matters, I am still waiting on Univ. of Texas for Women's Studies (my other undergrad major). Would it be better to attend UT for WS and get to work with the AMS people there (and save SO MUCH $$) or go for a true AMS program? any advice would be GREATLY appreciated, as i have no idea! (but i think i am leaning towards w&m...any other W&M people out there?)
  13. I'd like to know about this town as well, as I am accepting a position at the Master's in American Studies. From what I can learn online, i get that W&M is a school full of "nerds." not that this is hugely horrible by any means, but is there a lot of truth to that statement? Is it odd that the campus is basically Colonial Williamsburg? How about housing-- where do grad students live? There is no craigslisting for Williamsburg so I'm a little lost when it comes to the housing information. Thank you!
