  1. My personal plan is to give 4 to 6 weeks notice. I feel giving them enough time to find a replacement before I'm gone is a sign of respect and that they deserve that after having been my employer for a few years. However there is no need to tell them in March if you're going to be leaving in September. If things are going well right now then why risk messing them up before necessary? I purposefully avoided my employer knowing about my plans on the chance that if I am not accepted anywhere I won't want to be thought of differently and have all my prospects of advancement erased. It depends on the situation but I'd advise more than the minimum, but not just to tell them as soon as you're accepted
  2. Hi everyone, I've got a question this morning. I just got contacted via email for an in person interview. The only thing is that they want me to come out this Friday (no mention made about if I pay for this or they do). I live 2000 miles away from the school and work full time so I'm not sure if I can even get the days off. Any thoughts on this situation? What would you do? Thanks
  3. I got a rejection today as well. It said the following: How dare you apply to our illustrious program you unworthy miscreant! We are dispatching ninjas to your home to punish you for your folly! (Or something very similar to that) Rejections are to be expected in an endeavor of this kind. As Dumas said so eloquently, "All human wisdom is summed up in these two words: Wait and Hope".
  4. I feel for you. Think of it from training in what publishing will be like. Lots and lots of rejections from journals and critiques that can be quite harsh. Perseverance is certainly a job skill in academia.
  5. For those of you who haven't heard from ASU check the website with the login they sent you (at least for Business School I was given a login). I never received any emails from them but the site updated me on my application result.
  6. North Carolina sent me an email on a Sunday night. I think it was the one right before Martin Luther King Jr. day (so a 3 day weekend normally). And I've been accused of being paranoid for checking my email on Christmas eve...
  7. On one of my on-campus interviews I got a bit of advice from one of the students that I thought I might pass along to others. If you're in the position where you have to choose between schools (we should be so fortunate) and one offers funding and the other does not, then take the offer with funding. Not for the simple reason of getting money, but for the implications of that offer. It means that school now is going to have a vested interest in your success and you're much less likely to 'slip through the cracks' during the program. It also means that at least one of the people there fought for you to get you that funding. An offer of funding indicates a certain level of excitement that will be valuable beyond just the monetary aspects. Best of luck to everyone... hopefully those of us who haven't heard will have good news on the way soon.
