Our?

Haha that was me with the faculty who said that. But I think it was because she missed a week. Only a week. Lol

Why would they know you are not bringing them? It sounds like the only one judging you is yourself.

Distance Master's SLP Programs

But your list is nowhere near comprehensive. -
The other day I made a colossal mistake at clinic. I evaluated a student I shouldn't have. The mother had checked the "I do not give my consent" box. I haven't told my supervisor yet, and I don't know what to do. I'm scared to say the least. As some of you know, I'm not in a very friendly program. Have any of you made similar mistakes? What kind of mistakes have you made? How did you resolve them?

People who have issue with this topic should stay out of it. The original poster was looking for information, and so far, I think I'm the only one who's provided any. If you want to vent your frustrations at the world, do it on Facebook.

I know a few terrible male students that definitely don't deserve to be in grad school. I've done most of their work for them (group projects). I can't imagine how they got into grad school other than the fact that they're male.
-
I know a few guys with <3.0 GPAs on this forum who've gained admission, but not any women. Despite the profession's efforts to attract more males to the field for the last 15 years, the number of male SLPs still hovers around 5%. With that in mind, I don't think a 16 year old study is out of date at all and is just as true now as it was then. Even with grade inflation, I think faculty are more willing to take a chance on a male applicant than on a female one with similar stats. The trend indicates as much.

Hopefully, you're applying to more than two, competitive schools.

Research shows otherwise. I think people on this forum are looking for real answers.

There is a older article that suggests that male acceptances run the gamut from high to low GPAs, as low as 2.7, whereas female acceptances run a much tighter range. So, the statistics suggest that yes, men do have a slight advantage expectation wise over a comparable female applicant. I will try and locate this for you. I know the study is out there, but it's not the most recent.

Distance Master's SLP Programs
mr479 replied to lolarue87's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
University of Vermont is only Pre-Masters. I wouldn't recommend this program because it doesn't have all of the pre reqs one generally needs to gain admission to a graduate program without conditional acceptance. -
P.S. Thank you for all the supportive information. I will indeed pass it on.

Well, discrimination would be difficult to prove. And besides, it was only hypothetical. The pregnant student in question wasn't denied admission but might have been. I only mentioned my professor's comment to shed light on the type of people we're dealing with in our program. Otherwise, it has nothing to do with me. I empathize with her, but she would have to file a discrimination claim if she indeed felt discriminated against because of our professor's comment.

It is a difficult program to get into. They expect great GRE scores as well as GPA. Every ingredient to your application must be stellar.
-
Yes, but this program had a 68% pass rate, which is abysmal. Such a low pass rate is a giant red flag no matter the class size. And I would expect a smaller class size to have a HIGHER pass rate as each student should have more individualized attention. A program that cannot handle 10 students does not sound like a good program to me.
-
These are all good points. Thank you. The praxis pass rates at my school have indeed fallen over the last few years to 80-85%. Now, everything is geared toward passing the Praxis. But learning to pass a standardized test is in my opinion not the same thing as getting a good education. This really is an unfortunate situation.

Of course it's accredited, or I wouldn't be here. And I'm almost positive that students have as little power with CAA as they do at their home institution. No one cares about an "unhappy" student.

Do you think I will get into a grad school!?

You should definitely retake the GRE and submit your best score. -
Hello SLP family. I was wondering whether it was common for all or most Pediatric Infectious Disease Units to have an SLP as a part of their team. I have come across only a few hospitals that specifically mention having an SLP for this unit. I wonder if it is more common to have an SLP on call who periodically comes from another unit as needed? Any information would be appreciated. Cheers everyone!

Grad Programs that do and don't accept online pre-reqs
mr479 replied to kjm26's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I think it is rare that a college would not accept online courses. And how would they know? Does your transcript say "online courses"? I did my leveling online through UF, and there was no such indication on my transcript. I did not come across any schools that would not accept my courses and had no issues during the application process. I don't imagine you will, either. -
Remember "The King's Speech"? Most famous SLP to ever live didn't even have a degree. School is a waste of resources. lol
