What should I be doing now/prepping now?
mr479 replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Work on your interview skills. I have a 4.0 GPA, great GRE scores, but I was rejected by every school I interviewed for. I wasn't prepared, and I had a bad attitude about the questions they asked. I thought the interviews would be much more meaningful, but they were very generic: "Describe a challenge you have had and how you handled it." I would suggest compiling a list of all potential questions-you can probably find a helpful list online-and practice answering these with a friend or by video taping yourself. -
Reapplying for Spring 2016 / no acceptances :(

I noticed that this forum isn't as active for spring, so maybe that's a sign that it's not as competitive. -
Can you do a Masters Thesis at NMSU? I am excited to go to NSU, but as far as I know, they do not have a thesis option. I would be interested what if any research options there are as a student there. Its multicultural location guarantees that you will work with culturally and linguistically diverse clients during your studies, which is the selling point for me. There is placement at the Cherokee immersion school nearby. I may regret later not going where I'd be be able to write and defend a thesis or research project, but right now, I'm really conscious of cost and the population I want to work with, and it's no guarantee I'll even want to do a PhD. First get some taste of graduate school, then form other goals I think.

Waitlist & Deadline Conflicts
mr479 replied to ChatterBrain's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I have an ignorant question. Why does it matter how you decline an offer? We are busy people, and we paid to be considered for admission. I don't think it really matters how you respond, just that you respond is professional enough. -
Do you know this from experience?

I see some results on the results page now. Are any of you reading this among those planning to attend NSU? -
Haha, Holly, I think you're Ms. Congeniality of this forum thread! Congratulations!!!

Oh believe me, that's one aspect I regret!!! LOL. I used to live in Alaska, and really hope to do my CFY and land a job there after grad school. I'm a weirdo for cold and darkness. Haha. Like I said, I'm not religious, but UND has a great Linguistics program there although they mainly translate Bibles into endangered, indigenous languages. I was looking forward to meeting some top names in the field of Language Documentation as well as SLP, but I'm going to a great school in the capital of the Cherokee nation, where I can combine all my interests! They even have bilingual stop signs in English and Cherokee, which has its own alphabet!

Holly!!!! YAY! You got an acceptance?! And a waitlist. That's so great! You really have been so supportive on this forum. You have a great soul. Any University will be lucky to have you! Congrats!

I'm happy for everyone who got accepted or waitlisted. I got neither. But I'm ok! Because I already got accepted to my #1! Yay! I knew my interviews went poorly, and I wouldn't go anywhere that bases their admissions' off of a 15 minute impression anyways. So I'm pleased with their decision. Best wishes everyone! -

I got in!!! I requested to be informed via phone, but letters are on their way. I am definitely going. Rent is cheap. Tuition is cheap. Score. -
Thank you. You pick University of Utah yet? Lol. I just love Salt Lake.

I just got accepted to my #1, AND I'M SO HAPPY I CAN REJECT MY OFFER TO NORTH DAKOTA!!!!!

I just spoke with a faculty at WWU, and she was very nice, but my application was declined due to my GRE. 84% verbal, 35% math. But the way I see it is, do they want someone mediocre in everything, or someone who excels at one thing?! Oh well. -

Kelly. We're in the same boat. I might also have to move to ND. But I wish I'd applied to Minor. I didn't know about it at the time. UND wants me to do more pre-reqs! And UofL I can't afford. So I don't know what to do! Ergh. -
Ok, good to know. I guess I'll put in my acceptance by Friday if I don't hear anything else. I'm still not looking forward to the extra coursework. Having to do a biological science makes no sense. I had a minor in Nutrition. But they say that doesn't fulfill ASHA. But veterinary science does? WTF? That makes no sense. A former professor of mine is doing research on diet and hearing loss, so surely a nutrition course is more applicable than veterinary science and ASHA should accept it. Anyways, that's my dilemma...

I'm somewhat jealous, although I didn't apply there. But I feel somewhat better about WWU when you also got accepted to a much better school. WWU is an enigma it turns out. Yes, congrats to everyone who got in and really wants to go there. I'm still waiting to hear from my #1. A professor in the program wrote me a personal email today saying they are behind and asking if I'd accepted any offers. What do y'all think, is that a good sign, or do you think she was trying to tell me subtly to take another offer? -

uote name="Mia6714" post="1058259881" timestamp="1427249819"] I'm happy the waiting is over and I am excited to attend the University of Utah, which is a much better fit for me anyway. Good luck to everyone who is waitlisted and really wanting to attend. -
Of course you qualify as a resident. As long as you're not a dependent. The University of Utah lets you claim residency even if you're a student, as long as you do things like get a Utah license, vote in local elections, etc. Many universities have policies against granting students residency after 1 year, but the U is not one of them.
