Top 10 school w/o funding vs. top 20 w/ funding
camilo9292 replied to camilo9292's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Well guys I got great news which will definitely sway me towards American. My sister is moving to DC and I'll be able to live with her and my family is paying off a good portion of the money that isn't covered by loans! Thank you for the assistance... it seems I'm going to DC! -

I'm very aware of the COL... very aware! LOL. I've had family who lived there and I've heard their takes. But yes, I've also been told that I have to network extensively because of good competition. I will be attending American University and will do my best, thank you very much! -

You're very right. The Syracuse financial aid information made me rethink and I didn't want to make a silly decision based on my preference but I think in the end it'll be a better choice to go to American. Thanks! -

That's what I'm thinking. I am very sure that American will give me a better opportunity to get a job in my field compared to Syracuse. I think taking the short term hit for the long term gains is worth it then. My biggest issue though is the cost of living and finding a job while there. -
Hey everyone, So I've been admitted to both Syracuse Maxwell's MAIR program (top 20) and American SIS's masters program (top 10). I just got financial aid information from Syracuse and they are offering me $16k for the first year with a half-time GA position with stipend valued at $7k. Syracuse's program is 1 1/2 years long and costs a total of $56k. American University offered me no money and their two year program costs $62k. All I was offered was $42k in loans, the rest will have to come from somewhere else. I'm caught in a tough decision. American was my top choice and remains my top choice but Syracuse is offering me a decent amount of assistance. On the other hand, American University is in Washington DC and right in the neighborhood (almost literally) of the career path I want to take with surely more opportunities to network, Syracuse is a bit further off from DC and I imagine more difficult to get into the field. Plus American has the program that suits my career better (United States Foreign Policy and National Security) while Syracuse only has the International Relations degree with a security track. Any advice? I think I'm leaning towards American but Syracuse's offer has really given me something to think about. Thanks in advance

I'm not in significant debt, just a couple thousand from my undergrad but nothing terrible as of now. I was all set on American until Syracuse came in with their financial aid package and made me reconsider based on the money I'd be getting -

Syracuse Maxwell - Admitted thread Fall 2015
camilo9292 replied to Xperto's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I got my email today. No idea if they were all sent out at the same time or not but I know I got mine -
In the same boat as you. Will probably be attending AU SIS this Fall and was worried about this same situation. Following this thread

What I was doing when accepted to: Syracuse University- Checking my spam folder and I saw an email with the subject "Maxwell Admissions Decision"... Imagine my shock. Was not expecting it for another couple weeks and luckily I was checking my spam folder that evening! Penn State- Was packing for a trip to Italy and I had just finished zipping up my luggage when I got a call from a Pennsylvania area code. Was told I was admitted and started my trip off on the right foot. George Mason- While in Italy I was told by my brother back home that a large envelope had come in the mail from George Mason University. They don't release decisions online but my status had changed and they asked for official transcripts so I kind of expected this. The envelope confirmed my suspicions and I was admission. American University- I had just finished a day of exploring Florence and I got back to my hotel. I connected to Wifi and I received an email with the subject "Your decision is now available for viewing" from American University... I almost broke my laptop rushing quickly to open it and when I saw the acceptance I immediately ran to the room my parents were in to tell them the great news. As you can see, my Italy trip was memorable!

Got in as well. Not sure if I will attend but definitely will visit especially since they will reimburse travel expenses. Very interested in this school so this will help my decision

That seems like a plausible scenario. I did call and they said a decision has been made and I should expect my decision in the coming days (by snail mail it seems) so possibly I may recieve an admission that will require a transcript to become fully admitted. All mute because I am not planning on attending anyways
-
I hadn't received a GMU ID number until now and I submitted my application 6 weeks ago and they also accepted unofficial transcripts during the application process so it may be a different process between Masters and PhD applicants
-
Was just given an ID number for a school I applied for 6 weeks ago and have been asked for official transcripts from my undergrad institution (application accepted only unofficial transcripts). I called and they told me a decision has been made but cannot release it over the phone. Good sign?

My family and I are out of town. I'm in no rush to check it immediately because I likely wouldn't be going there anyways but it would be nice to get confirmation. I am taking the transcripts and ID as a good sign considering I wasn't given an ID until they asked for a transcript. Thanks! Maybe I'll ask an aunt to check it for me haha.

Hey guys, long time lurker but first time poster. I recently applied to a couple schools for their masters programs in international relations. One of the schools I applied to (George Mason) doesn't send out admission decisions via internet (they use mail) but I usually check on the status of my application to see if anything is missing. I checked today and saw that I have been given a George Mason ID and have been asked for official transcripts from my undergrad institution. I won't be able to go home and check the mail for a couple days but would being given an ID and asked for transcripts be a sign that I've been admitted? I called and they told me a decision has been made but cannot release it over the phone. Thanks in advance!
