  1. Interesting indeed. Can I ask where you've been accepted, ignotus? Once I finalize my decision some funding should ostensibly be freed up at the other schools I was accepted, and it'd be nice to know if I helped someone out.
  2. I was in a similar situation a few years ago. I don't think anyone would recommend committing to a PhD program without having first secured funding, so definitely get an answer from someone in the department as to deadlines etc. before making a decision. You don't want to be forced to make a choice between taking out loans or dropping out. I also committed to a PhD program without funding, but then rescinded my commitment after talking to a smart person, so backing out is an option if you end up hearing about funding from a different program. Doing an MA first definitely worked out better for me (I didn't major in Anthro in undergrad, and was completely oblivious to how unprepared I would've been going straight into a doctoral program), but your situation is likely different. I would say keep pushing for answers from the department, even if you feel like you're being a nuisance. What's the worst they can do, un-accept you? Can they actually do that?
  3. Anyone claiming the other Yale acceptances? Feel free to PM me! I'd love the opportunity to chat. A little about myself/my research: - From Annapolis, MD, currently living in Baltimore -I'm now working in CRM as a field director for a company based in Washington DC, mostly doing surveys of the national parks system and properties owned by the navy. -Academically, my research is focused on Iron Age West Africa. I've excavated in The Gambia so far, but due to a recent coup attempt the political situation there is less than ideal, so I may be forced to change locations. -My advisor at Yale would be Roderick McIntosh, but I'm also really interested in William Honeychurch's work in Mongolia. We both deal with highly mobile societies, often difficult to detect archaeologically, and I feel his methodology would translate well into my contexts. -Also very interested in bioarch. I've taken a few classes, nothing too in depth though. Definitely an aspect of my skillset I'd like to shore up while at Yale. The possibility of black plague reaching sub-Saharan Africa via trans-Saharan trade routes is something that's been proposed by a few people, but never seriously investigated. Possible dissertation topic? Other than that, feel free to ask. This goes for anyone else too if you share some of my interests or see something you'd like to talk about. Thanks!
  4. So I'm in the process of making a final decision, and have it whittled down to either William & Mary or Yale. Both are offering similar funding, both have excellent faculty, grad students I'd like to work with, resources, etc. Basically they're pretty much equal in my eyes, and even after visiting I'm still nowhere near being able to choose. However, one thing I have heard about W&M (from both profs and grad students, though no one actually affiliated with the university, which is why I'm kind of skeptical) that you fine folks may have some insight on, is that they've had difficulties actually getting people through their PhD program. It's a young program (about 15 years old I believe), but their MA in historical arch is top notch so I'm puzzled as to why they would have problems producing PhDs. Has anyone else heard similar things, or able to offer some insight/explanations? Any info would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
  5. No problem oceanus, I believe letter should be arriving sometime this week.
