Hi all! To those who got in, congrats! To those who didn't, I'm sorry. It's not because you aren't amazing. I'm speaking as a current Stanford GSE student. A few members of my cohort and I were reflecting today on this day last year. A good hand of people didn't have interviews but were accepted, so if you didn't get one that's not on you! I was interviewed, but apparently in my track that's more common. Last year's acceptance rate was under 3% because of the sheer number of applicants. If you have questions or want to reach out feel free to DM me. I'm not your typicaI applicant as I didn't submit GRE scores, I took a break between grad school and taught for four years, and actually come from a non-sociology background (background is in STEM), so my profile may or may not help. Anyhow, I wish you all the best of luck and know that you'll find your next path soon enough!

No funding for part time so I will more than likely decline. It seems you can try and get funding through your advisor or loans or fellowships but those definitely wouldn't cover tuition. I know they fully fund full time PhD students but they only have a few spots for those. I have other options though thank goodness!

Hi all! Check your portal apparently. LOL I found out I got a decision letter because I was just willy nilly checking the portal website. It's from 2/24! Anyways I don't know if other decision letters have come out for those applying for full time (I applied for PhD part time). Good luck to everyone!

Depends on what you're looking for? You can look through the results page of Grade Cafe under Education as well. I also applied to NYU and Colorado University-Boulder. Columbia - Teachers College has a great reputation too.

Hey y'all! I just got an email tonight asking for potential interview next week. Just wanted to keep you in the loop. I guess that means they're still processing applications.
-
I mentioned 3 in my statement and was interviewed by two individually.
-
Sorry, do you mean how I got here or which specialization of GSE?
-
CTE, focus in Science Education. @jk25 this is the first I've heard from anyone. I have two schools I've heard nothing from and an interview for one school next weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if everyone is much behind on their timeline.
-
Yes this!

I was told during the interview that once they narrow down the pile they send them to the different tracks (SHIPS, RILES, LDT, CTE, etc.) for those advisors to look through the students who selected them. I believe if you mention a POI they might reach out for an interview. After they pick their top choices they come back and have to narrow the group down again and then it goes to the dean's office so they can make final selections and make a cohort. I was told creating a cohesive cohort is also an essential part of the process.

For the best. I do not blame anyone for reaching out to get any extra info (though I'd not be too obnoxious). It just seemed that the advisors either have to be tight-lipped about information or maybe they don't all hear back at the same time?
-
So I'll be honest. I was a low key wreck yesterday and the day before after seeing acceptances and rejections start rolling onto the results page. Someone in results said they reached out to their POI to get an update because they felt GSE was taking too long? So I gathered up the courage to email my POIs to see if there was any sort of update I'd missed out on (or if they could at least tell me I'd been rejected so I could rip the bandaid off). The reply was along the lines of advisors/department have done their part, it's now in the deans office, "results go out late Feb-early March". We'll update you if anything changes. [insert manic laughing and internal screaming] So I thought I was done for. I decided to reply back to at least thank them for letting me know what the situation was today, but I've recently gotten a reply back saying they received an update from the admissions office and I'll get an official notice that I've been accepted. I've been accepted. ? So lots of things are happening in lots of different ways. Don't give up. Even if it doesn't happen this year don't give up.
-
Definitely makes sense. When I spoke to the Stanford GSE they said they received thousands more applications probably because of HGSE not accepting apps! I'll just keep my fingers crossed and bide my time til March (that's so long T_T)!!
-
Sounds good. I applied to the science and environmental education area of study. I would think they may send out an email letting folks know they're not conducting interviews this year. It is a weird year so maybe that's why. I also wonder if NYU received an influx of applications as well!
-
I also applied and haven't heard anything either!

Thanks! CTE with a focus in Science Ed.

This! I was interviewed by two POI around Jan 24th. They mentioned they usually take in 24-30, but it would probably be closer to the lower end due to COVID. After my interview they mentioned they would advocate for those students they wanted in the GSE program but it would be passed off to admin/dean to create cohorts that fit well because that was an important dynamic of the program.

From Texas! It's a big (and small) change.

To current and former grad students: I'm starting my first year as a master's student this fall and my financial aid awarded me with work study. Does anyone have advice as to what kind of job to pick or to NOT pick? I understand the first semester of grad school will be tough and I want to do as well as possible, so I'm not sure if I should pick a quick easy jobs like game day assistant, theater usher, administrative assistant, etc. or something more related to my field, but probably more labor intensive like a lab technician or research assistant. Thanks!

Anyone have a favorite planner or agenda they use? I had a staple, but they've recently went out of business (for shame!)

Anyone else happily overwhelmed with their big transition to Columbia? I've got less than a month until I move across the country and I'm trying to learn as much about NYC/Columbia as possible before I get there.

Does anyone have recommendations of phone apps that are really helpful in the city and the area? I'm like terrified of getting lost D:
-
My mom was going on and on telling me how I needed to clean my room and it was my turn to do the dishes and I just happened to be checking my email on my phone and I interrupted her with "Mom...MOM. STOP TALKING" And of course she's like "What?" And I'm trying to reread the email to make sure that what I'm reading is real and I show it to her to read and she starts hopping up and down and she starts shaking me saying "Do the dishes later!!! You got into grad school!" I think she was even more excited than I was. She was moonwalking in the grocery store later that day because she was on this all time high. It made the acceptance even better.

I went to SHSU for my undergrad and I would consider it a "young" college town. It's expanding and changing despite the old townees fighting for a static and boring town. It started with Huntsville becoming a wet city (alcohol allowed) back in the 70s, and surprise surprise they even allow bars to stay open to 2am now (starting my sophomore year!). I started in '08 and graduated in '13 and there were huge changes on campus and within the city as well which is for the better as the student size has increased more and more each year. Huntsville isn't small enough to know everyone, but isn't large enough to get lost and not run into someone you know. It's small enough that most areas you can bike comfortably or walk if you enjoy longer walks to and around the area. It's incredibly safe considering the state prison is in your backyard. Some would consider it quiet and underwhelming if you're used to a big city, but often times it's what you make of it. There are plenty of natural areas, hidden grassy coves which are great for studying, some super cool underappreciated bars (the ones you won't find the frats/soro people at), and interesting people in the town. It's definitely possible to commute from the Woodlands but prepare for some of the worst traffic depending on the time you leave to and from home. I would definitely say try living in Huntsville at first. The living and board is cheap and can't be beat. Once you begin to visit the local establishments (bars, diners, etc.) and find a close group of friends or colleagues it makes the experience much more enjoyable.
