  1. I got a phone call from one of my interviewers today! I've been accepted at Einstein!
  2. Undergrad Institution: University of IowaMajor(s): BiologyMinor(s): ChemistryGPA in Major: 3.54Overall GPA: 3.76Position in Class: not sureType of Student: Female, domestic, queer if you want to tick of your diversity checklist hahaGRE Scores (revised/old version):Q: 154 (56%)V: 166 (96%)W: 5.0 (93%)Bio subject test: 800 (84%)Research Experience: 3 years of experience studying the genetics of hybrid female fertility; very exciting results. I've done all the work on my own project as well as assisted with a couple others in the lab. No publications yet, but it will eventually be a paper--just unfortunately not in time for application season.Awards/Honors/Recognitions: A couple in-department scholarships/fellowships, as well as honors in my major and general university honors. I'm presenting my thesis next spring.Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I worked in a radiology lab doing data quality checking for 1 year, work in 2 separate labs on campus (mostly just helping with lab upkeep), biology dept outreach for the honors department, tutoring for the intro biology course, and also have assisted in TAing the intro biology lab section for 2 semesters.Special Bonus Points: Not particularly? I will be taking a grad level course next semester though. My letters will be very positive. My mentor thinks I hung the moon.Applying to Where: Columbia, Rockefeller University, Einstein Biomed, NYU
  3. Hey guys, thanks for the help. Here's the deal: I have one solid letter that I know I'm using. This is from my mentor who I've been doing my undergrad research with. Now I have three other options for letters, and I need to pick the two I want to use. 1. My first option is with a professor I worked with for about a year. He is VERY big in his field, and the project I was working on was actually affiliated with my top choice school. The problem here is that he's a very busy guy, and I'm almost positive he won't remember me (he's the type who basically contacts the world 100% through his assistant haha--she and I are great friends). 2. A tenured professor in my department. I took a class with him and got an A. We aren't super close but he knows me well enough. 3. A non-research professor (lecture only) with whom I've done two semesters of internships with assisting in teaching the lab component of the intro bio course. She knows me very well, but because she's not doing research I'm not sure how well her letter will apply to my application. Thanks for your input!
  4. Yeah, I realize that fit is the #1 thing, but I was under the impression that there was still a sort of GPA/GRE "cut-off" that places with a large number of applicants use to whittle the group down a bit?
  5. I'm curious to know how everyone decided what schools were worth their time to apply to, and which ones were just not gonna happen. I'm beginning to think about potential grad schools, and as nice as it is to be confident in myself, I don't know how helpful it will be if I reach a little too far haha What was your process for narrowing down your "reaches" and "safeties"? And how did you compare your application to the schools you were looking at to see if it was a good match?
  6. Ah, well a little background on me, I'm in undergrad currently and by the time I'm applying I'll have 3 years experience working in an evolution lab at my university (probably no publication from here by this point), and an additional 1.5 years working in a radiology lab (from which it's possible I will have a very small contribution on a paper - though it's not super relevant considering my interests are in Evo Devo and Speciation Genetics). I'll have honors in my major/a bio honors thesis and colloquium presentation based on my current research as well. My GPA is 3.82, though my GPA in my major is 3.62 :/ Do you have suggestions on how to "swing" the lower quantitative score?
  7. So I just got my scores back yesterday, and I'm not sure what to think. I scored a 166 V, 154 Q, and 5.0 AWA. I'd like to study Biology - Evolution. Are these scores good?? Not so good? I'm getting mixed signals! I know that the quantitative score seems a little low, and I've always sort of struggled with math. What kind of programs would these scores get me into? Should I set my bar low, lol? I know that the GRE scores aren't the be-all-end-all, but I'd still like your thoughts/experiences on this.
