UVa doesn't require the subject test absolutely...at least not for medieval lit applicants. I emailed the graduate coordinator in the English department (who happens to be a medievalist! ;op ) to ask specifically before I applied, and she said they definitely would consider an application with my medieval experience without the GRE subject test.
