I think you're right. There's no reason for analytic philosophers to think about the divide because all the top ranked and well known institutions are analytic, at least in the English speaking world. So it's easy to just see analytic Phil as philosophy proper. But I've seen more push back from analytic philosophers in maintaining the divide philosophically, saying that X, y, z aren't really doing philosophy, or something. So, I think that continental philosophers are more willing to acknowledge a political divide while analytic philosophers are more willing to acknowledge a philosophical one.

It's true that a lot of the debate centers on what counts as 'philosophy'... If you come to Toronto you'll realize that continental philosophy is relegated to the centre for comparative literature. We have a bunch of continental profs at the philosophy department but their real home tends to be comp lit/German/classics.

Not upset about not getting into amazing schools or anything, but damn, that Continental/Analytic divide is strong, though. I thought people were mostly over it.

What makes you say that? I feel like analytics are oblivious to the divide, continentals hyper-aware of it. Probably has to do with power dynamics :P

Congrats! Does your email also have X's and Y's for the visit date?

You perfect person... I could kiss you.

If you have any questions about Toronto feel free to let me know! I won't be here during the visit week but I've been here for far longer than anyone should be anywhere.

Ecstatic to report that I was WL as well!

Question for the Kantians: What's your AOI? Mine is ethics and political. They may admit off the waitlist based on AOI, so I hope you two aren't also ethics. :)

Looking forward to meeting you in April!

Congrats to both of you! Mine are Kant's metaphysics and philosophy of mind, so I definitely won't be competition for you. I wonder if they're gonna pit us Kantian against one another

    Yale waitlist, anyone?

That would be me! I really wasn't expecting this, and had completely reconciled myself to being rejected from Yale. I still doubt any of those admitted would turn down their offers...

  7. I go to Toronto and my understanding is that sometimes an international applicant who is considered for some special fellowship for international students gets notified (and asked if they intend to accept) personally prior to other acceptances being released. The lone Toronto posting could be that (esp. given that the poster is American). And no, there isn't only one international student admitted annually--this year a decent number of the incoming class were non-Canadian.

Congrats!! Can I ask when you got the call? Trying to determine if I should assume rejection at this point.

Thank you! I got the call at 11:34 EST which is around 3.5 hours ago. I think it's very possible that they don't call everyone at once, best of luck to you!
