They will let you take the GRE for low GPA. I think their main concern is going to be how do you know you want to do social work and what are the reasons why you left law. They will definitely focus on that.

My internship for undergraduate was about 30 miles away. Three times a week. Pay for parking. None of it was reimbursed.

SDSU was my first choice, but ironically was the only one that sent me a rejection letter! I will be attending CSUF, good luck with your studies and maybe our paths will cross someday in the small small world that is social work.

FYI for those who have been accepted and submitted a deposit: I've been waiting for a financial aid award thinking that it would be given by April as stated on the financial aid site. I ended up calling financial aid yesterday and they informed me graduate students will not see a financial aid award until summer. Just in case anyone else was wondering like me.

This was the closest topic for cities I could find. I figure someone would know the answer to my questions on here. I will be attending CSUF in the fall and wanted to get some ideas on the surrounding cities. My boyfriend will have to commute for work and I will only be on campus two days a week. I want to be more centrally located rather than just living in Fullerton. We were looking at Cypress or surrounding cities. I've been comparing city ratings and crime maps. My parents, who live in Northridge, have said that Anaheim is a hit or miss in some areas. How is that area, or what other areas would you recommend? Thank you

I would go into it with an open mind. My undergraduate placement of working within homelessness was something I never imagined myself doing, but now it's the only area of social work I think I will ever do!

The California drought and your choice on going to grad school there
sunnyskies13 replied to LaSombra's topic in The Lobby
I am originally from CA and will be returning for grad school. I have heard this from multiple people wondering how I feel about moving to a state with water restrictions. I remind them that when my parents and I lived there, there was a drought going on too that was ended by "Miracle rain of '91". It's not a relatively new problem for CA, just that it's getting more severe. IMO, and it seems like people agree on here, is that they could be doing more to conserve water such as more control with Nestle and agriculture use. I'm glad to see Palm Springs and other areas thinking about changing their landscaping. -
I currently live in Saint Paul. The best options for safe, affordable housing would be Dinkytown(the neighborhood right near campus). You can probably find some good options in Uptown neighborhood or Northeast MPLS too, but it would be more of a commute. Even living on the western edge of Saint Paul like Como or Hampden neighborhood wouldn't be too far especially with the green line train running through there. I've discovered since moving into the city that duplexes/fourplexes will be cheaper than apartment buildings if you are able to find roommates. If you have absolutely never been to MPLS/STP and are wondering about what areas to AVOID definitely North MPLS. Other areas of MPLS can be spotty for crime at times, as it is with every urban area. If you are really concerned, I would look at crime maps that you can access online from the police departments.

SDSU was my first choice, but ironically that was the only rejection I've received so far. It was between CSUF and CSULB next, CSUF just got back to me first to be honest. My undergrad is a Bachelor of Social Work(BSW) and I am currently a licensed social worker(LSW) in the state of MN.

I just received an admission offer through email. I sent my application in two weeks before the deadline. However I have already accepted with CSUF so hopefully one of you will get this opening!

Cal State MSW's - which are better? Is USC worth the $?
sunnyskies13 replied to genmsw's topic in Social Workers Forum
IMO a degree from USC is not worth the debt you will take on, especially in a social work career. I agree with what most people have said about USC on here. I chose different CalStates to apply to based on the specific programs that they offered and the cost of living in each area. I accepted an admission offer from CSUF. -
Yes confirming what was stated above multiple applications are fine just make sure if a deposit is involved that it is refundable if you don't accept.

Advice on SFSU, East Bay or SJSU programs?
sunnyskies13 replied to calmsw's topic in Social Workers Forum
I applied to all three, but have accepted CSU Fullerton instead. It depends on what type of social work you would like to do. They are all accredited so there's no problem there. SFSU seems more broad of a program as it is Individuals, Families and Groups but my undergrad advisor said they have an excellent program. SJSU and EB have more population specific programming like child welfare and mental health. I don't know much about EB or SJSU reputation but was told on another chat by a current SJSU student that they have had drastic budget cuts to the social work program this year. -
Oh you know what, now that I'm looking over the letter more there is a mention that "traditionally, we have applicants participate in an interview" however that will not be necessary for my application. So that theory about some people having to interview and some may not have to interview looks to be true.
-
I applied for the full time program. I just wanted to confirm that I received a letter from the department today through personal and CSUF email confirming admission. So how the process goes is you get an email from the university offering admission to your personal and CSUF email. Then about five days later, the department sends you more information. No mention of an interview. Just some additional forms to complete. Good luck to everyone!

I think the timing coordination is just off. Just because I like to be on the safe side I will not withdraw my other applications yet. But the office said not to worry and we should be fine.

I called the social work office. They did confirm that the admissions was from the university and that I should be hearing from the department in a couple days with further information. They said the order of things is a little different this year because this is the first year they have required a deposit for graduates. Also my application status has changed from referred to grad department to admitted and accepted offer of admission. Hope this clarified a little bit.

I was accepted through email a couple days ago and have already decided to attend and paid the enrollment deposit. I initially received a rejection from San Diego so was quite nervous about getting into my other top choices. Stats if interested: 3.5 gpa, bachelor in social work, am licensed at bachelor level in MN, have been doing case management with individuals who are homeless and have a mental illness. I am originally from CA so I am excited to finally escape the MN winters again! Good luck and hope to see you this fall
