  1. Thank you! and Congrats to you as well. It's nice hearing from an American perspective coming to Canada. I was slightly worried about the Maxwell reputation in Canada, and I think you're right that Toronto has that universal reputational value. I'm just not sure how much that is worth in terms of additional $$. It's hard to put a price on that!
  2. Well I thought I had definitely made my decision, but recently received an offer from the Munk School of Global Affairs. I am from Canada, currently living and working in Ottawa, and am interested in coming (or staying!) in Canada post graduate school. That being said, I have been offered a great assistanceship and large scholarship at Syracuse, that combined with the one-year program length makes it hard to say no. On the other hand, Munk has great reputational value in Canada, and would be easier to launch my career from post-graduate school. Any advice or words of wisdom? Anybody studied in the US and had a hard time coming home? Or any advice would be really appreciated.
  3. I don't think anybody can answer this but the school itself. I would let them know ASAP. Perhaps it means there are more requirements you will be needing to take, or you will be on probabation, but it really depends on the school, program, and so many other factors, based on the limited info, it's impossible to tell.
  4. Unless you want to work in the foreign service or other government department, I would not choose NPSIA. Their program seems to be a revolving door for the federal public service, which is great, if that's what you're looking for.
  5. I opened an RBC Bank USA account through RBC. That was a few years ago, I think they are now RBC Georgia. I am able to move my money easily online either between my Canadian RBC USD account or regular checking account to my RBC Georgia account. I've gotten checks from them too, and a visa/debit card. It's really easy and convenient. The only down side is that they don't really have branches in the Northeast, but since you can do most things online, it wasn't an issue for me, and I prefered having everything in one place.
  6. Most (if not all) MPP programs are much heavier on the quant than I had previously thought. I scored a 153 on the quant (164 verbal and 5 on writing), and I think my low quant skills were some of the main reasons I wasn't accepted into certain programs. Do you have any math/econ/stats skills on your resume either from previous courses or employment? That would help. Otherwise, I would definitely take the time to retake the test, or re-evaluate if you want to pursue the MPP/IR route. For what it's worth, I will most likely be starting at the Maxwell School this summer.
  7. Hi! Most likely attending the Maxwell School, and also looking for friends/roommates/anyone hah. Only bummer is that we start in July Went to the visit Day this past Monday. It looks like you need to be picky about location to avoid bad areas.
  8. I am completely torn on this decision. I have narrowed my choices down to the Syracuse MPA and Queen's University MPA. Both are one year programs, both will be comparable in costs (received generous funding from Maxwell), and both are relatively close to Ottawa (where I want to be). A few key differences. The Queen's MPA seems to be much more policy, theory-based vs practical/management at Syracuse. Most people from the Queen's MPA have gone on to work for the Government, which I am not interested in doing. That being said, Maxwell seems great for creating networks in the US, but not so much in Canada. I think the courses and program interest me much more at Maxwell, but I am nervous that it will be difficult to come back to Canada following my degree. I have no idea what to do. Does anybody have experience with doing a graduate degree in a different country/region that where you decided to settle? Was it difficult to create your networks? (Background: I have 3 years of work experience in nonprofit, Canada-US organizations)
  9. I didn't have any leverage (in terms of funding from other schools) asked, and doubled my offer. It never hurts! As for the OP, I had 2 years of full-time work experience in an international nonprofit + a summer internship in an embassy at the time of application. I think it definitely helped in terms of securing funding, mainly because most of my funding is coming in the form of assistanceship, which strongly looks at work experience. As a whole, my work helped my figure precisely why I wanted to go back to grad school and wanted I wanted to take, making my personal statements much stronger. ETA: I got an assistantship that will cover 75% of tuition + stipend, if that helps any.
  10. Accepted in the MAIR and also looking for a place! I'll be going to the new admit day in April and hopefully can scout out some neighborhoods too.
  11. 26 when I start in the fall. I mostly applied to professional programs (MPA/MPP) and most required 2-3 years of work experience. I've worked in an international nonprofit for 2.5 years, and will have 3 years of work experience when I start.
  12. Admitted to the MAIR, and received funding decision. Anyone going to the new admit days? I plan on going April 6th
  13. Waitlisted for the MGA. Accepted at uOttawa GSPIA and Syracuse Maxwell. Rejected at HKS. Still waiting to hear from Queen's and Calgary. Leaning towards Syracuse, as they've offered me a great financial aid package and the program is only 16 months.
  14. Quick questions before I give my answer, when did you hear from Queen's MPA? I'm still waiting to hear back. Ok, now my answer. I would personally choose Queen's. The alumni network would be much more helpful than Waterloo (IMO), and could help you in your search post-grad. Unless, of course, you are interesting in working in the Waterloo area.
