  1. Hi all. I'm starting my second semester and I have a new TAship with a professor in my department. We talked briefly when I was first assigned to her class and she said she'd send me the syllabus, reading list, etc, but she hasn't! The class starts tomorrow and I've reached out to her twice now. She wasn't present at a meeting where I was supposed to meet her, and the program director and administrators haven't heard anything from her either (I asked them if they had heard anything from her). I understand she might not have everything together yet, but she hasn't even sent me a "hey, i'm not ready with things yet, give me some time, etc." It's frustrating to me because I'm not sure of my responsibilities for this TAship yet, and I don't even know what material she'll be covering. This kind of lack of communication really bugs me, and I've heard from others that she can be a bit spacey. I don't want to email her again and bother her, but it seems like she fell off the face of the earth. Has anyone had this kind of experience? Should I just chill out and wait for her to come around?
  2. I'm entering an MA program for which I have a TAship that requires me to work 9 hours per week. It's a pretty sweet deal, and I'm only on campus for class and to TA two days per week. I have a part-time job at a non-profit because I probably couldn't pay my rent without it. They're really flexible and I have a lot of down time there to work on stuff. I am also considering taking on an (unpaid) internship for ~10hrs a week at a reputable company in a field I would love to work in. However, I'm a little worried about overworking myself. I'd essentially be working ~45 hours per week NOT including the time I spend in class and doing course work. Is this insane? Should I say no to an internship until I'm more financially stable/have more time? I don't really know what my coursework will be like, and I've always managed my time pretty effectively, but I don't want to burn out in my first semester. Does anyone else have experience/advice on how much they take on while in school?
  3. Hey all, I hope this isn't too silly. I've already accepted an offer for a funded MA. I didn't visit before accepting the offer, but I have had many conversations with people within the program, both professors and students, and got a great feeling for what the program is like and I decided it is my best option. The program director recommended that I visit, but since I've already accepted the offer, I'm a little unsure of what this visit could entail or what I should plan for, since it wouldn't be a visit to help me decide. I'm not sure if I should rush this visit in soon (I'd have to travel a few states), or if I should take my time and visit in the summer when I actually move to the same state as the school. I obviously want to get a good feel for what the program and my TAship is going to entail in more detail, but I'm not sure how I should pace this visiting/meeting with the department stuff. Generally, I guess I'm asking, what the heck do I do now? Thanks for any advice!
