  1. Hey guys, anyone admitted to Harvard's biostats MS? I see several admission on the results page and would like to ask you guys some questions.
  2. Filing deadline was Feb 12th, and I missed it by a week. I feel totally stupid about this, but I have no excuses for being negligent. I am a first year master's student in the school of public health. Does anyone know if missing the filing deadline means that I won't be getting any financial aid? It does say that " Please note: If you do not apply by the priority filing date, you will still be considered for federal loan eligibility. " So it seems like I won't be getting any need-based aid then? Does anyone have insight on this?
  3. Congrats guys! Did anyone who applied to the masters biostats program receive his/her admission decision?
  4. Hi guys, so on the application requirements for the Statistics M.S. program at Stanford, it appears that the university wants applicants to mail TWO copies of their official transcripts? I submitted my application at the end of 2015 and my checklist is still incomplete (I only sent in one copy of my transcripts over a month ago). Does anyone else's checklist say that it's complete? And if so did you mail TWO copies of your transcripts to Stanford?
  5. Thanks for the advice. So which section of my CV should I list it under? Should I make a separate section titled "Manuscripts"?
  6. I have a manuscript that is soon to be submitted to a journal, but I'm not quite sure where to list it on my CV. For now I put it under the "Publications" section as (pending submission). Is this appropriate?
  7. Submitted my app before Thanksgiving and I had all of my transcripts but only 1/3 LORs. But on the same day my app moved to the verification stage. So I guess you don't have to have all LORs in before they put you in queue for verification.
  8. Hi guys, my first deadline is 12/1 and I haven't submitted my SOPHAS application yet. I am still waiting for 2 LORs to be submitted...because I think SOPHAS wouldn't even start verifying your app until transcripts and 2/3 LORs are sent in, correct? For those of you who have already e-submitted your app, how long did SOPHAS take to verify it?
  9. UG School: Large public university (top 100 but not known for statistics department) Ethnicity/Gender: Asian female GPA: 3.83/4.00 GRE: V163 Q167 AWA4.5 LOR: 1 excellent, 1 good to great, 1 generic to good Courses: Probability (B-), Mathematical Statistics I (A-), II (A+), Nonparametric Analysis (A), Regression Analysis (A), Analysis of Variance (A), Statistical Computing (A), Applied Linear Algebra (B-), Abstract Math I (A), Abstract Math II (A), Real Analysis I (A-), Real Analysis II (A) Research: 2+ years dementia research (independent study with well-known professor in the field), 3rd author publication in a special issue, 1st author manuscript in the works (mostly ready for submission), 2 UG conference presentations, 1 dementia research conference presentation1 short summer project with math prof on autismWork/Internship: quarter internship at the California Department of Public Health (mostly organizing data, analyzing infectious disease trends. etc)1 year in cancer research lab (survival analysis, power analysis, running statistical tests for graduate students and their projects)Leadership/Extracurriculars: Stats club secretaryAmbassador of mathematical sciencesApplying to: UC Davis Biostats MS (target), UC Berkeley Biostats MS (target/reach), University of Washington Biostats MS (reach), Stanford Statistics (reach) Please let me know if you have any school suggestions (preferably in California). I would prefer an applied/computational program (I read that UoW has a very theoretical program (?), so I might have to reconsider). Thank you for your time.
  10. I am applying to Biostats programs this Fall, and I am wondering which of the two professors should I ask for a rec? Prof 1 Pros: -Took 2 Mathematical Statistics classes with him (got A- and A+, so there's a nice upward trend) -attended almost every office hour and asked questions -full time professor in the statistics department; more experienced than Prof 2; probably has written many letters in the past Prof 1 Cons: -can't write much about me beyond academic performance Prof 2 Pros: -Worked in his cancer lab for 4 months (doing survival analysis, power analysis, other statistical tests for grad students and their projects) -can write about me in a working environment (ability to collaborate with others, etc) Prof 2 Cons: -assistant professor in genetics, so he has no renown in the statistics field -can't write much about me beyond work -not as eloquent as Prof 1 in emails (I don't know if this is a good indicator of how well he writes LORs); he misspelled my name once in an email There is also the option of asking both professors. In that case I would have a total of 4 LORs. I'm not sure if that will hurt me (if 3 are randomly selected to be read, then there's a chance that my strongest LOR is left out) or help me. So any advice is greatly appreciated.
  11. I approached a professor for a LoR, and I gave him my resume and transcript. He also requested a cover letter from me so that he knows why I want to go to grad school and I'm guessing just to know more about me. He mentioned that the more information, the better. So I'm wondering, what should I include in the cover letter? And how are these usually structured? So I'm thinking of including why I intend to attend grad school as well as highlighting some experiences from my resume. Is this ok?
