Take a breath, call them back.  Apologize appropriately by saying you didn't have access to your phone and you are sorry for missing their calls.  (FYI that's ALL you say... don't blubber.)  Then say that you are excited to hear about their interest in your application and want to know what the next step forward is.

yeah I hardly believe that.  In past years, all DMS programs (including PiN) were on Dec 19th... and they were the only one to post that.  Chalk it up to a troll, I think.

I didn't apply to BBS... I applied to the immunology program.  So that's why I'm mildly concerned.

Congratulations!  I hope that doesn't mean anything bad for the other DMS programs...

Dude.  You're speaking kinda out of your butt.  I think it's horrible to tell the people that they should go for a masters instead of a phd for something such as GPA.  I mean, I'll always encourage people to apply widely because you hardly know what will come through in your applications, but what you said about that person's GPA was mean.  If I remember correctly, they had held a research job all the way through undergrad.  I mean when I first read through it I missed that and thought that maybe their record wouldn't show the aptitude for grad school, but it really does.  Maybe no one else will agree with me, but I think you're trying to make yourself feel better by saying this stuff about other people.  Go look at the results board; people get rejected from all kinds of schools with a 3.9.

It's kind of sad that future applicants will have to go over like 4 pages of rants before getting to relevant things :/

I'm so sorry, I misread it and thought it said, "REU-type thing."  Which is what people say at my university when they are trying to say their summer lab assistant job at their lab was more than it really was.  I literally had some guy freshman year tell me he got an REU as a freshman to stay at the university when all he did was wash dishes.  And the only reason people found out was because he was running around saying the genetics department picked him specially for his wide array of talents.

I feel like it depends on the school, I'm sure there are at least some that do and it might depend on how many applications they get. However, I feel like if they did have hard cutoffs they would not be that high, maybe like a 2.5.

Who really knows?  I don't think there are cutoffs in the way that you are talking about them.  I think they probably organize the applications and go through them manually.  At least, that's what I've heard from professors at my school.  But it is probably different everywhere.  Don't worry about it!

What's the median? Std deviation? Average is pretty much useless here...
