  1. I agree with basically everything said here (it really doesn't matter whether your S.O. works/studies/etc. in your same field of interest or not, what does matter is what kind of chemistry you have). My experience is that with my ex-gf (she is a mathematician) we did had a lot of fun. Neither are on the same field per se, she is more into topology and I am more into applied math in geophysics, so we didn't exactly share the exact point of view/interests, but it was great and we did share a lot of things that we wouldn't be able if she wasn't into math. But yeah, now that it is over (recently) it has been a little weird with common classmates, friends (but when isn't?). I wouldn't change a thing about it even if I could though.
  2. Hi Origin415 and Enigma, I'm also be attending UW this Fall 2010, but in applied math program... I'm excited to get there! For me seems like I'll be there around early August since classes begin late September/early October, mainly to save up a little money (Seattle isn't exactly a cheap city to live in)...
  3. Congrats! I already accepted the admission offered by UW... I'm excited to live in Seattle the next two years and to meet other fellow applied mathematicians!
  4. well...first of all... congratulations on your acceptance to Columbia appmatharmy! It is truly a life-changing and possibly a once-in-a-lifetime decision so indeed a difficult one... I'm also waiting (still) to hear back from NYU math myself... but in the worse case-scenario I'll go to UW and then apply to the PhD program "Atmosphere Ocean sciences and Math" (within Courant) in 2 years... In response to your comment, I'm somehow pending in RA and/or Tuition Waiver (which in NYU i think the support is null at least to MS grad students), but also have the support of both Fulbright and home-country government funding... Best of luck to all!
  5. And just to add, I believe that the whole "Fulbright process" that we had to go through in our home country is itself a screening process... it is definitelly a plus sign next to our application... I think the reason of my relatively early acceptance is that their international deadline was due on November... I haven't heard from the rest of the universities I applied to So where universities did you apply nmihaylov and to what program? I applied to MS in applied mathematics to: University of Washington (Seattle), Oregon State University (math), NYU Courant and Harvard SEAS... I hope I get accepted to NYU, but anyone will be ok...
  6. Hi! has anyone got an acceptance already? or at least a response? I applied to the MS in math, but actually I'm more interested in NYU's PhD program in Atmosphere Ocean Sciences and Math (within the Math department) (both PhD programs, math and AOS&M, share the same MS in math)... good luck everyone!
  7. hope some one with more experience than us post any comments.. and share his/her experience with us
  8. Hi, I'm currently a Fulbright nominee, but I have already get an acceptance letter from an university (not top but do has a great grad program)... I do believe that being a foreing, with outside funding (fulbright and posibly from our home country as well) is a big boost... many universities take it into account specially because we are people who "can affort" our living expenses and tuiton (at least we don't depend to much on the funding offer by them) and being honest, foreign students are a business there... One of the faculty over my country (PhD at USCD Scripps) told me the same thing... and more now than ever, people with outside funding benefit the universities at US... Of course this is not a general rule... top universities do get more applications that they can accept and often have to reject people who not only could handle the program, but who also have funding on their own... I think that being a Fulbright nominee do has a weight, but acceptance depend also on the relative strenght of our application respect to the other applicants, maybe you are not the only 'Fulbrighters' appying and perhaps they can only accept few people, so they will accept the best one... Best of luck!
  9. Hi Kathryn, seems great this topic for me... I'm applying for Msc in Applied Mathematics and so far no rejections, and hopefully expect not to get one (not likely though)... so far, I've been accepted at University of Washington, and still waiting on the others (Oregon State University, NYU and Harvard SEAS)... I'm also applying to Miami, but in this case, I'm applying to the marine sciences program... I believe this is my safe choice, and concerning the others, maybe OSU seem posibly too, but hopefully I'll get admitted to NYU... best of luck!
