  1. check out ALL the profs websites...send emails to the ones you think you like (research wise). dont be toooo picky though.. also some of them might be willing to give you a TA position in case they dont normally offer RA positions. If you're sooooooooooooo close to getting ur minor in Comp Sci you might wanna try like the CS dept or like a general engineering department if they have any TA positions... Although April 15 has passed and some schools might give you shit about it, but if you get lucky with a good understanding prof who gets excited about you getting excited about his research , it can happen.
  2. full tuition remission plus health insurance and $1600/month at UT Austin
  3. the international said 10-15 percent....which is kind of like what my friend told me...he pays 10% for the same stipend...
  4. Actually now I just asked a person at the university he said i'll get 1200 out of the 1600....do internationals pay more taxes???
  5. 10% is right on....i asked one of the people from my school that graduated last year and went to austin. he said out of his 1500 he gets like 1350. So 10% it is. But next year the stipends are gonna be 1600, but I guess it won't make much of a difference. Thanks
  6. Hello, I need to just figure out a rough estimate about how much of my TA stipend I will actually be getting in order to figure out my rent options etc. I went through the tax page on the university website but it is all very confusing. I read all the tax pages on the forum and I still have no idea what's going on. I will be getting a $1600/ month stipend (for 9 months) and $3258/term in tuition assistance, as well as medical insurance. I think this is all my taxable income. However I could not figure out my tax rate or anything really. Can anyone give me a rough idea about how much of the $1600 I will actually get? And is the tax on the tuition assistance also deducted from the stipend? The real question is, roughly how much money will I receive per month after taxes, and thus how much can I plan on spending?
  7. Cool, i need to rush to class now, but i'll send you the links tonight. Alot of these places look kind of good actually, but I guess its a matter of how far off the campus you want to live. All are in 10 minute bus range, but not all are in walking distance. Actually the ones further away look much better. 1, 2, 3 bedroom apartments with a bunch of facilities. I'm from Lebanon. Traveled here and there too. Spent the last summer at UC Berkeley doing an internship. Did you get a TA/RA position? I wanna know about taxes and if my stipend will be enough. I use MSN messenger, but I guess i'll check out Gtalk tonight.
  8. yeah...i'm into information theory and such, should be good...... craig's list looks too sketchy....i tend to avoid it... i'm looking for offcampus stuff too mostly single or 2 bedroom if i decide to go with having a roommate (which i think i will)...managed to find some furnished apartment complexes. some look good..i'll give you the links if u want......oh where are u from by the way??
  9. are we the only 4 ppl going there?? come on ppl!!!!
  10. i'll be attending UT Austin.....PhD ECE in the CommNetS track.... anyone has any idea about housing?
  11. I posted this in "The Bank" but still havent gotten a reply. But i guess it fits more here. please let me know your thoughts. So i got into UT Austin for the ECE PhD program, and they said that funding for incoming international students is very very limited, so i didnt get any funding, neither did anyone at my school. But i have gotten in contact with a a professor I am interested in, and he seemed interested. Although he will not give incoming students RA positions in his last email he told me that he's "looking for a TA offer" for me...... So now i'm really stressed, what do u think my chances are in this case? how does this work anyway?
