yea SAIC mostly has one free ride per department, and a few other scholarships, I doubt any more are in ceramics, maybe in painting though. You will most likely get a SAIC grant as their financial aid, and it will cover a little of your tuition. -
Hi,
I see you had an interview with ECU? I graduated with a BFA from there in 2009 and I am in the Sculpture MFA at SAIC now. Let me know if you have any questions about ECU.

after seeing this I am going to immediately invest in masking tape. -
Want to know your school's acceptance rate? Sort of?
michaelwebster replied to baja318's topic in Visual
approximately 5-10%. They usually have a little over 100 apply and accept about 8. I almost went there last year so I spent some time hanging out at the school. -

Well actually I just noticed that you applied to historic preservation, I have no idea if they interview in that dept. I was just alluding to the standard art school departments (painting, sculpture, print, photo, etc.) -

I believe Chapel Hill has made their first round of acceptances, not sure about a waiting list. -

The age thing isn't black and white, its just not often that schools take people straight out of undergrad because they haven't had the time to develop their work to the level necessary to get in. Most of the people who go straight into an MFA don't get into the schools that could really push them if they would have waited a few more years. I think you will get into some great schools, and I am surprised you haven't had more bites from schools. But if you keep making more kick-ass installations in the next year or two and keep developing your work, they won't be able to say no. -
you better buy a plane ticket asap!

Its a good offer. Art schools and departments don't get as much money as other programs. Its not the best, but its good. -

It may play a role if they have a cut off line for the whole school, but that would be posted online and the office assistants would have to weed all of those people out. As far as in the review, your GPA is not likely to make any difference. The faculty probably never look at that info at the top schools, I know for example one school only looks at thumbnail images for its first round cut. If your work doesn't look good from a distance, your out. GPA is going to be last on their minds when going through hundreds of applications in one day and far more relevant info is available (SOPs and LORs). -

yea I was asked this from a few schools. I always answered honestly. I think they can gauge a lot about what your aspirations are, how much research you did, and they want to know who their competition is for you. I don't think its a bad thing at all to have other good schools in your answer to this question, they expect you to apply to many schools. If you have no other schools, then maybe they think your not serious about your career. If you have a list of schools that don't make any sense to your work, then maybe they think you didn't do your research. I don't know any of this for sure, just the vibe I got when I was asked this question. -

I don't want to get your hopes down, but for the sake of transparency, I know SAIC is having their interview day on March 5th. -
SAIC has in-person or phone interviews for most departments (performance is the only one I know that doesn't have interviews). Most international students opt for the phone interview.

These weren't from Yale but nevertheless, some questions from interviews: why do you want to go to this school? why do you want to go to grad school? and Why now? (especially important if your in your low 20s and soon out of undergrad) How do you think your work will change when you move to this location? What resources of this program will be the biggest benefit to your development as an artist? What are your influences? Do you have any questions for us? (They will almost always ask you this, always have a few good questions that are smart but don't point out gaping flaws in the program) More specific questions may be about artists, movements, writers, books that interest you. I recommend taking notes about anything that you don't know about during the interview, look up the info asap, so later in the day if you see the professors you can comment on how that info was helpful and relates to your practice. This shows you have the capacity to listen and take advice. The most specific you can be to show you have done your research into the program the better. Bring material to show new work or additional images on your computer or printed if need be. Also, I recommend taking some control over the interviews and making sure you get to say what is important to your work, whether they specifically ask about it or not. If I remember some more questions I will post later. There should be some in last years posts too.

Interview - how much about art history and contemporary art criticism?
michaelwebster replied to illum's topic in Visual
From my experience its not about throwing around contemporary artist's names, but just being able to discuss your work in a way that shows you are familiar with some art history or contemporary thought. Definitely bring in stuff from writers who don't write about art, its not about being fake, just introduce your work, and where you see it going. -
SAIC doesn't stipulate anything about sharing work from one discipline to another, and the faculty in different areas don't check up on that stuff. to Another: if you get an interview in sculpture let me know who you are when you get here.

I would like to see a list of where the people who voted went to school and compare that to the rankings. It used to be the top two administrators in the art school/department who voted in the rankings, I am not sure if the new ones were done this way.

I think it depends a little on the school, but I know CalArts and SAIC for sure want in person interviews if your in the country. It knocks your chances down a lot if you dont go. I think the more competitive a school is the more it will hurt your chances not to go. I agree that it is silly to almost require people to fly across the country for an interview. -

definitely in person is better than over the phone. last year, for example, my program only took 1 phone interviewee out of the 10 students they accepted. She was overseas. About 15-20 people out of 40 interviewees interviewed by phone. Schools really look down on your opting for a phone over in-person. I do not know about Skype though. I think going in-person shows your dedication. -
i am sure the storm set them back a few days. I have a friend to applied there and if she hears anything I will post it.

SCAD isn't ranked very high, its more well known as being focused on its undergrads but I don't know a lot. I know its not exactly held in high regard relative to most schools. -

its not a problem to ask politely. I know a few schools can fly you or will work with you some according to last years posts. CCA wouldn't get me tickets but they offered for me to stay with someone.
