  1. financial aid said end of march or early april for aid packages, thats all I know.
  2. They want me to visit easter weekend, but they didnt say anything about paying for the flights. Did you hear something about flights getting paid for?
  3. I emailed finanical aid yesterday and they wrote back that aid letters would be sent out late March or early April. They dont have to stick to the April 15 deadline so they probably dont care if they are cutting it close. Sucks for all of us.
  4. Maine College of Art is not part of the Council of Graduate Schools. The schools that are part of the council set their deadline at April 15, but since Maine isn't, I believe they can set their deadline whenever they want. Sorry, I am sure you will have the whole MICA thing resolved soon anyway.
  5. East Carolina University in Greenville, NC has admissions both semesters. If your interested send me any questions about it.
  6. I got a rejection letter from Carnegie Mellon yesterday, I thought I would have a better chance there than at CalArts or SAIC, but they think otherwise. I also got a call from CCA yesterday. CCA Social Practice: Accepted (no aid descision yet) Calarts: Interview tommorrow UCLA interdisciplinary: ? SAIC Sculpture: Interview last weekend Carnegie Mellon: Rejected Columbia New Genres: ? UNC: Fellowship (only 10 awarded in the entire graduate school from any departments) UNCG: Interview
  7. I just finished interviews at SAIC for sculpture, and I believe they were interviewing for painting and photo as well. I could be wrong about this. I also heard from UNC Chapel Hill and I got a graduate school wide fellowship for more than a full ride. I can at least be happy with that even if I dont get in anywhere else. Also, I met someone that already got accepted to CCA social practice, so if anyone else interviewed for them as I did then you probably are waitlisted or rejected as I probably am
  8. I dont think its about taking the political out of your work either. One way or another your work will be political, if its an abstract painting or your photos of dead roadkill or your new piece with the flag, all art is political. The question is how to use the political in your work consciously and in a subtle way that will show the viewer something they were unaware of. That doesnt mean that you have to uncover the watergate scandal and photograph it, but use your visual tools you have been trained with to uncover something dealing with the politics of imagery as well.
  9. I think your work could definitely expand in interesting directions with more 3-d stuff; this piece just didnt feel like yours, it doesnt feel like an expansion of what you are already doing.
  10. I believe its a little too easy to decipher, its an american flag, a machine gun, and you get american aggression in foreign policy (or some slightly different interpretation). The way that the gun is portrayed by the flag being cast around it is more poetic than having a gun on top of the flag, or a gun embroidered in the flag, but its still too one dimensional to affect the viewer. Direct political statements reaffirm the viewpoint of people that agree with you, and simply anger people who dont agree with you, without giving them any reason to see another side of the story.
  11. I dont think they have processed the finacial aid yet, the only reason I heard about my possible fellowship was because its a graduate school-wide one that required another decision process. They didnt mention anything to me about additional aid if I get or dont get the first one. I expect we will hear from them in the next month.
  12. I love the images, they remind me of this project of Santiago Sierra's. http://www.santiago-sierra.com/200712_1024.php
  13. I got a badly worded email today that had me excited for a few hours. This came after I interviewed with them Thurdsay... "Dear Michael, We recognize with the downturn in the economy, the challenge of funding a graduate education is greater than ever. You may be struggling with questions about how you will be able to afford your studies at California College of the Arts (CCA)." They sent this out to everyone who applied. My heart was racing for awhile.
  14. I asked about a timeline and they said they would send out letters at the end of the 1st week or 2nd week of March in all departments. I really hope to get a phone call before then.
  15. I know of a few interview questions that were not on the original list posted on page 1. This one was asked to me for CCA last week. "Why do you think now is the right time for you to go to graduate school." and " What have you done since you have graduated" (I graduated in May) last year a friend of mine was asked "Why havent you taken any time off between your BFA and applying for you MFA" he was finishing his senior year and going straight to grad school.
  16. wow, everyone has pretty different work. I expected to see a few concurrent themes running between peoples work stylistically.
  17. I just had my interview with CCA, but for social practice. Since they only accept 5 I bet they are ahead of the other areas.
  18. I am really interested in seeing some of the work everyone is producing. If you have a website or flickr account or have images anywhere on the web post a link. mine is www.michaeldwebster.com
  19. Your work uses a nice variety of materials. I think we should start a thread to post websites, flickr accounts or whatever has our work on it. I am interested to see what else everyone's art practice is.
  20. I had 14 hits on my website from NYC within two days on Thursday and Friday last week. These are almost definitely the Columbia people, so they must have just reviewed portfolios. Usually I only get a few hits a week in NYC.
  21. Yea, its all just one program. Check your junkmail, my email from them was in my junkmail. Also just heard back from UNC Chapel Hill today. I got accepted and they recommended me for a school-wide fellowship. CCA Social Practice: Interview CalArts: Interview UCLA Interdisciplinary: ? SAIC Sculpture: Interview SAIC Performance: Waitlist Carnegie Mellon: ? Columbia New Genres: ? UNC: Accepted UNCGreensboro: Interview 3 to go.
  22. Cal Arts sent out an interview email today. I got a regular old USPS letter from UNC Greensboro a few days ago.
  23. An MFA program might want you to go in a direction you dont want to. Even smaller traditional schools will still push some kind of conceptual framework. Any worthwhile school will try to make you throw the so called objectivity of photojournalism out the door first thing.
  24. I applied to CCA in social practice and have a phone interview. They called me to set up the interview, I don't know if all programs are calling. Here is my list SAIC, Sculpture: Interview SAIC, Performance: Waitlist CCA, Social Practice: Interview Carnegie Mellon: Columbia, New Genres: CalArts: UCLA, interdisciplinary: UNC Chapel Hill: UNC Greensboro: Still waiting on 6 programs.
  25. I just heard back from two schools about interviews. SAIC Sculpture- Interview SAIC Performance - Waitlist CCA Social Practice- Interview and I am waiting on hearing back from Carnegie Mellon Columbia UCLA Calarts UNC and UNC Greensboro SAIC is the only school I applied to sculpture though.
