  1. Seems like almost everyone on here applied to Penn State! Anyone interested in sharing some stats? Mine will make you feel better about your app! I promise!
  2. Ah, yes, I heard about 700 which seems almost impossible to me. I was surprised that the graduate secretary (? I'm not sure who it was) responded to an email about when we should expect to hear. And she said early April! That's pretty late, but it makes me feel better about my lack of acceptences.
  3. So are people saying that most of the initial rejections have happened and if we haven't heard anything we're still in the running? Because I would like that to be true. Even if I get rejected across the board, I'd like to know I made at least the first cut.
  4. What do people mean by "implicit rejections"? How do you know you have been implicitly rejected? Other people have been notified but you haven't? Please do tell.
  5. Which location are you not so enthused about? Can I guess Columbus? That's where I'm living right now, which is why I'm applying to OSU. Columbus ain't that bad, you just gotta find the right neighborhood.
  6. Hey, I am thinking of applying to the same program next year with the same subfields! Do you think you could give me your stats, just to see what I'm up against?
  7. Yeah, I usually am. But I had just gotten rejected from another program and I was feeling brave. It was short.
  8. Oh I should have been more specific- I sent them an email and that was the response. Don't worry! I'm the only one that got the email since I asked!
  9. Email saying most decisions will not be final until early April. Maybe you already knew this but I didn't! I was getting worried seeing some acceptances on here. So there's still hope, guys.
  10. I just got rejected from the Comp Studies program at OSU. I am sad, but it was my least favorite program, my first being the English program at OSU to which I also applied. I realize there is no way to tell, but I'm at work and bored and sad, so what do you think this means? Do you think this means I should assume that I also got rejected from English since that program is way more competitive? But I guess it's also bigger, so maybe there's a chance? WHAT DOES IT MEAN???? I know. It means nothing. But I felt like I was going to get into Comp Studies and not English. So I feel like I've bene hit with two rejections, not one. Please convince me otherwise.
  11. Oh. Well nevermind. Just got rejected. Now I won't know anything about it ever. Sadness.
  12. OSU's Comp Studies program almost doesn't seem real- I applied and haven't heard anything, from the program or from other people. Have people even heard of this program? I haven't seen one result for this year on this site or one mention of it? Anyone?
  13. Yeah, I can't imagine applying to 20 schools. I don't feel like I could possibly give the SoP's enough effort unless it was my full time job to apply to graduate schools. Now that I've expanded my list to the whole country, I've been trying to cap my list at 8. I think that's a lot but, again, my boyfriend says I should do way more. I agree that you shouldn't just tack on schools so that you go SOMEWHERE. You gotta go where you want. My problem is I get excited about almost every school I read about.
  14. Well that's good, now I know I'm not crazy. I've been working on a list of something like 20 schools and trying to narrow down where to apply next year and my boyfriend thinks I'm crazy. He thinks it's weird to be working on that when I haven't heard back from the schools I've already applied to! Also I feel a little bit like I'm missing out if I do get in to OSU. It's a good program that I want to go to, but I started researching it out of necessity, not out of excitement. So I guess either way I can be positive about what happens. It'd be nice not to wait another year though.
  15. I only applied to OSU and PSU for location reasons (PSU is still too far away but I just really like the program). My boyfriend has one more year at OSU so I can't quite move anywhere just yet. And I realize that there is a complete chance of having nowhere to go for grad school. I'm coping by already making a long list of 10 schools to apply to next year and hoping that it will be a pleasant surprised if I don't wait another year. Someone, please, empathize with me because the waiting is so much longer for fewer schools!
  16. Well then I would look into Dayton- it's only about 45 min and I think would be possible for a commute. I forgot that Wright State is there, I've known people who went there. Again, don't know much about their programs besides English. There might even be another private school in Dayton that I am forgetting... Also there is Kent State, in Kent. Good luck! Hope she gets into OSU, that would be the easiest. That's what I'm waiting on right now, which is why I've been looking into other schools in the area. None of them really have comparable English programs, besides OU and Miami. We'll see!
  17. Learning from my boyfriend who just applied and is attending an MFA in his 2nd year, I've learned from his app experience. I think one thing that is understated is judging by the amount of recruitment and effort the dept is putting into you. He got an overwhelming response from OSU's English dept, phone calls from the DGS and other students, lots of activity on facebook, emails, offers for funding and recomendations for places to eat out. His response from FSU was a single letter saying 'you've been accepted.' When he tried to call to see what the funding situation was, he didn't get an answer. And the outcome of these situations are, OSU has a very non-competitive, supportive program where everyone is friends. Everyone has funding so there isn't a competitive negative vibe. I hear from someone who went to FSU that their program is very unfriendly and competitive. And I think that you can judge these two cases by the response he got and the amount of effort and recruitment they put into him. It's the most important thing, I think, to have a friendly and supportive environment and you can tell by the way they respond to you. Has anyone else had similar experiences? What are the responses like for other schools? I'm waiting to hear anything, myself.
  18. Hey, we're in similar situations here so I thought I'd share my thoughts. I'm currently applying to OSU for English, a program that my boyfriend is already in. It is the only school that I applied to in Ohio. I applied for English so that's a totally different situation than an MS. That being said, I can rattle off some universities that I know little about as far as program info for your wife, but that I know are close. There is Capital University which is in Bexley, I don't know about their graduate program. Case Western, among others, is in Cleveland, I know a couple that are in a situation going to OSU and CW and commute between cities on weekends. Denison University is in Granville, which is even closer and they have a graduate school. It's only about 40 minutes from DT Cbus. I don't know how far Oxford is, it's probably more than 1.5 hrs, but Miami University is there and a good school. OU is good and Athens is a cool college town in the foothills, its about 1.5hrs away. U of Cincinnati is about 1hr 40 min. U of Dayton is 40min. That's the extent of my knowledge. Sorry if you already know a lot of this, just trying to help!
  19. Whoever posted Steve Holt! in the comment section for results for U Pittsburgh: Thank you. I needed a laugh.
  20. So I've been hearing that PSU got 700 apps for English. That is an insane amount. I am wondering if anyone knows the rough number of the entering class, i.e. how many do they admit, specifically for the M.A.?
  21. I applied for both OSU's English and Comparative Studies program with the assumption that the CS program might be less competitive (fair assumption?) Has anyone else applied to the CS program? I haven't seen one result for it and I have no idea what to expect. Anyone know anything about it?
