  1. I just saw another Rutgers on the result page. Anyone wants to claim this? I heard nothing from Rutgers. It does not look like a good sign.
  2. I am kind of having an idea who your referee is. Let's talk over PM.
  3. Are you serious? Normally referee won't refuse to write letter for a particular school. One of my referees is not particularly in favor of me, but he submitted his letter to MIT(maybe a bad one though)
  4. I totally understand how you feel! I was rejected by 12 schools last year which include NYU and MIT. I just feel very sad, when I think about the miserable fact that it is likely that I just won't have the chance to attend MIT for the rest of my life.
  5. Congrats! Have you also heard back from MIT?
  6. Congrats! I just got a rej from MIT. It is my second time applying to MIT. It looks like I won't be able to attend MIT for the rest of my life. Too bad. When I saw that message, I am kind of having a stroke, and just looking at the screen, not knowing what to say.
  7. Exactly! This is what happened to me last year!
  8. I saw that you were interviewed by UMass. I saw from the results pages that UMass general does not conduct interview. May I ask whether the interview you got in the past was a standard interview with bunch of people in adcom or a personal interview with just your POIs?
  9. Got my second acceptance! I am excited!
  10. I asked, and I am waiting to hear back.
  11. I am in the U.K. too. The flight ticket is kind of expensive and I am not sure how much the department can reimburse me.
  12. I do not think it is a good idea to have just one POI/no POI in an SOP for an Master Program. Generally speaking, MA program has bunches of coursework where you are expected to be taught by a number of different professors. Mentioning couple of POIs will show that you are a good fit for the department as a whole. I think in U.S. departments, decisions are generally made by a committee, and in some cases, an applicant got to get a majority vote in the adcom in order to get admitted. So, it is better to not to ignore the majority folks sitting in the adcom, and it is a good idea to show how you are going to fit into the majority faculty members' academic interests by mentioning a number of POIs and elaborating on how these folks might support you.
  13. Congrats to those who got in ! Chicago is a very competitive, good and supportive department!
  14. I have a good news for you. I applied to the MA program at UIUC. But given that I have already got a Ph.D. acceptance elsewhere, there is no point to get an M.A.(which is a second masters for me). So, should I be accepted by UIUC, I plan to decline and this means potentially there will be an extra spot open. Hope this will help you in case you need this spot.
  15. I applied to USC last year, but I did not get in. I got my result from my POI. You can email your POI and ask for a result. Some of the profs seem to be quite forthcoming to tell you the result before the formal notification from the university comes out (and it took ages to get the formal notification last year).
  16. It is an Skype/Phone interview. Presumably it is with a bunch of people because in the email they use the plural "faculty members" but they did not specify whether these people are my POIs or these people are comprised of the whole Adcom.
  17. Guys!! I received an interview invitation from Kansas! It looks like this interview is very a-typical because I am not told what kind of questions they would like to ask in their invitation form. Last year, I had an interview with HAWAII, and Hawaii gave me a list of questions to prepare. But this time Kansas does not even tell me what they would like to ask! I am freaking out! Any suggestion about how to deal with interview like this?
  18. I applied to two Masters programs. But given that now I have a Ph.D. admission, it looks like I do not need these the acceptance from these two Masters any more. Before I got my first acceptance, I was expecting the worst, and even planned to get a second master in case no Ph.D. program accepts me.
  19. I was thinking to apply to U of Alberta in Canada. But I eventually did not, because it looks like that it is not a good academic fit for me. U of Alberta places more emphasis on empirical and experimental aspects of linguistics. They require applicants to imply in their SOP which language area (s) one wants to work on. This is certainly a reflection of the empirical emphasis of the department. I feel I am more interested in taking linguistic theories as the objects of research, rather than taking theories as instruments for some other ends. But Alberta does have a very good funding support for both MA and PHD students. Have u applied to Alberta?
  20. So, where did you apply?
  21. Thanks! Good luck with your application!
  22. Yes, they have some great people there who ACTUALLY TEACH AND SUPERVISE! I learnt from my current program the lesson that having some excellent people in a program is not enough because having them does not necessarily means that they are going to teach and supervise me! Oxford has plenty of great people in terms of qualification, but many of them are merely nominally belonging to the department and they are not even in residence at all and some of them are in residence two weeks PER YEAR (How do these people meet with their D.Phil students? Well, some by email, while some by Skype, very infrequently, and maybe 1-2 hours per term at most.). Among the few who are actually in residence, many of them care much more about their own research than their students, and their negligence is legitimatized statutorily by the almost absolute power endowed on their role as a tutor/supervisor who can "FLEXIBLY" decide how many hours they spend in each student. I think Stony Brook is a place where there are great Profs. with excellent qualifications AND with the enthusiasm to ACTUALLY TEACH AND SUPERVISE, partially based on the comments on ratemyprofessor.com. FWIW, the Profs. shown up as faculty members on the website of stony brook will be the actual real people I will meet with during my time in the program in the future. I am also very confident that, in a good department in terms of both teaching and research like Stony Brook, I am not going to be taught by ONLY one part-time ADJUNCT for the next five years! Anyways, I am very happy about what has been offered!
  23. Yes, but I have not heard back from Rutgers yet! I got accepted by Stony Brook! This is the first Ph.D. acceptance in my life, after getting rejected by 12 schools last year! Seriously, if you got a dream and you work for it, eventually you will get it!
  24. hahah Just got my first offer!!!!!!!!
