Have you considered taking the defense language proficiency test (DLPT)? It will give you something measurable and doesn't cost anything. PM me if you need more information.

I'll start. I'm a first year student who works on us Latin american relations and the role of the catholic church in Latin america

On the other hand there are more than a handful of departments where military service is a big plus. Generally the larger state schools, but some of the private ones too. Don't want to give too much more in a public forum so PM if you want to discuss that more.

I will be moving in about 2 weeks. I know orientation starts on the 20th so I'll have an additional two weeks to get used to the area. I also recently found out due to my unique circumstances I will be excepted from the Intro to Historical Inquiry Course. I'm thinking I might want to take it anyway as a baseline and get to know the cohort, but I won't know until I can talk face to face to my advisor.

I know I'm late to the party but as a long time lurker I wanted to thank everyone for all the advice on the forum. Hopefully I can pass it forward one day. For the record I consider myself a Latin Americanist who plans to focus on religion, violence and U.S Latin American relations. I will be attending UT Austin, and from what I gather I may be the only one on this forum.
