  1. Hi Vincent, I really thank you for the detailed comments and have taken down a note of them.
  2. Some people believe that college students should consider only their own talents and interests when choosing a field of study. Others believe that college students should base their choice of a field of study on the availability of jobs in that field. Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented Points: - Midway: a field which equally rewards and is interesting - One extreme: life is dull and money loses value; makes very mechanical life - Stick to methods; no innovation - Other extreme: Basic requirements be fulfilled, lower than that causes personal issues The movement from school to college is a crucial stage in life; where a decision has to be made that would in some sense shape the life of a person: choosing a field of study. A person devotes a large part of his/her time in building up of the career creating his or her own identity; hence the choice of the field of study becomes imperative. The question that props up is: what factors should be given higher weightage while making the choice. What makes the decision even more involving is the fact that some factors might be subdued in considering others. Talents and interests are on one end of such contradictory factors while availability of jobs. However, prosperity without passion makes one dull and on the other hand passion without prosperity leaves one frustrated. The field of study is the area in which one develops their career. It is of the utmost importance to have a deep interest in the chosen field of study so as to excel and be efficient. A field of study which an individual pertains to be difficult and uninteresting would make him or her mechanical; in the sense, that the sole motivation to work comes from the paycheque- the work in itself is a mere tool to attain a luxurious life. Further, it leads to inefficiency as the employees become more methodological so as to remain in a safe position and never try to innovate in whichever field they are working in. Consider an MBA who actually has more capability and interest in cooking but takes up a corporate job as the salary is much higher; at the end of the day, he might not be able to plan the best strategies for the company as his talent is in cooking. However, even if the chosen field of area is less-paying; if an individual exhibits strong capability and passion, they might emerge as one of the best and gain recognition given that equal amount of hard work and dedication is put in. If the MBA student mentioned initially would have chosen to opt for hotel management in a reputed institute, he might have acquired similar or even a higher paying job in the field he was passionate about. The discussion might be consummated by making a pitch for the field of area considering talents and interests; the only condition for success being a wholehearted commitment towards the same.
  3. Hi, Below is my first GRE issue essay. Kindly rate it with comments; only comments would also be sufficient. Thanks! Writing task: A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position. Notes: Agree- Same basic education No differentials in rich-poor/ bigger and smaller schools Best talent is brought forward Equality in opportunities at the graduation level The main essay Same curriculum throughout the nation paves the way for equality in job opportunities immediately after schooling and for various college admissions resulting in an increase in efficient employment and literacy in the nation. A same basic level of knowledge at the school level ensures equality amongst all the classes and regions in college admissions. A girl from a remote village would be able to expect to get into the same college as a person educated in the biggest of the schools in urban areas. It would lead to creation of better job opportunities for all citizens of the country as everybody would be at least educated till the school level and hence could expect to get into jobs like teaching in primary schools, even if they don’t study further and it would help to reduce social evils like child marriage and child labour. Given that, a farmer in a remote village knows that his son would get equal opportunity to enter a college or get the same job as the person who studies in an urban area; he would want his son to pursue his school education instead of getting him married or engaging him into the field from a young age. However, still it might not be enough to ensure same level of education for all students to increase literacy if the poor people or people from remote areas are stuck with traditional ideas that girls should not work outside of their homes or that college education is very costly- the latter because it might be a demotivation to pursue even school education till some extent. Anyhow, given the assumption that school education would bring out some bright college students from remote areas and poor people and that, school education provides some kind of employment; requiring all students to study the same curriculum would lead to an increase in efficient employment and literacy in a nation.
