  1. I'm a Fletcher student, so I'm biased, but I chose Fletcher over SIPA because (actually I didn't end apply to SIPA because of these reasons)

    • Too expensive
    • I heard through SIPA grads and current SIPA students that the big name professors are never there. Like, you'll never actually get to face time with Jeffrey Sachs
    • I knew SIPA grads who were still looking for jobs a few months after graduation. Yeah, that happens to some Fletcher grads too, but I figured that if I end up in that position, I'd rather be in that position with a lot less debt
    • Larger class sizes at SIPA

At the same time, I'd rather be in NYC than Medford any day of the week.

I don't know why you'd have to take out 60K in loans to attend Duke, especially with your fellowship. I just checked and grad tuition at Sanford is 36K a year. With your fellowship the whole two year program would cost you something around $12,000 when only looking at tuition. Plus the cost of living in Durham is very affordable. You could probably get by with something in the ballpark of 20K in loans if you attend Duke

Maybe 30K total (15K per year)?

    1)  I am focussing on political risk managment and macro-analysis. Post-Fletcher, I see myself working in political risk consulting. I have truly enjoyed my time at Fletcher thus far, and would not go anywhere else, even if I had the chance to do so.

For me personally, at the time of deciding on enrolment, Fletcher made most sense because I am a career changer of sorts and therefore having the benefit of a very broad (include Harvard + Tufts Courses as well) and flexible curriculum were a major draw. It truly is inter-disciplinary. I have also found the curriculum at Fletcher to be most responsive to what's happening out in the real world. I had on several occassions met Fletcher alumns before deciding on the offer, and found the fletcher community (aka Fletcher Mafia) to be a very closely-knit group, which is something that was personally very appealing to me.  I havent found alums anywhere else bat so enthusiastically about their alma maters, which was a very positive sign for me.

    2) The Fletcher netwrok is very helpful. You will get a response 9 out of 10 times when you reach out to someone in the Fletcher network, even those in the higher echelons of their professions. Boston certainly is not DC or NYC and therefore there is a certain disadvantage to living in Medford. However in my opinion, it isnt a deal breaker and there are ways and means around it. Boston is home to headquarters of seveal prominent non-profits, so for people interested in exploring careers in the sector, it may not be any disadvantage at all .

    Hope this helps !!

Nice, I'm also interested in political risk analysis. Have you been successful in finding an internship in this field for the summer?

  4. I had very good results across the board, and was fortunate to be offered a 100% tuition waiver + small stipend to both CMU Heinz and Fordham's IPED program.

At the same time, I was offered $13K a year at Fletcher. I am also considering MSFS, but I wasn't offered any funding, so I will probably decline.

I have been reaching out to professionals in my field, and I've been getting mixed advice about the importance of the name and networking vs. actual technical skills.

My dream is to be an FSO, but if that doesn't work out, I am interested in working in some capacity, be it government or private sector,  in economic development and labor issues in the Middle East and North Africa.

My concerns about CMU is that it is more domestic policy oriented, and my concern about Fordham is that since it's pretty small, it lacks the networking opportunities that a big program offers.

Would I be crazy to turn down a free ride for Fletcher?

Im a current MALD candidate at the Fletcher School. Happy to answer any questions about the school!!

    Great!

First, how did you decide on Fletcher? What was your thought process? What are you studying and what are your post-Fletcher ambitions?

Has the Fletcher name or network helped you in your job/internship search? Do you feel like you miss out in anyway on networking and job opportunities by being in Boston instead of NYC or DC?

  6. I emailed on Friday asking about when we'd learn about funding offers, and I haven't received a response. This whole thing just leaves me with a poor impression of GWU. I understand that funding decisions might not be ready, but they can at least keep us informed about their timeline.

    Program: MPA, International Relations

    Undergrad School: SUNY Purchase College

Undergrad GPA: 3.48 (Dean's List the first two years, but fell off my last year.)

    Note: Graduated in three years

Work Experience: I've worked as a reporter in various capacities with publications in The New York Post, LA Weekly and various papers through the Associated Press. I've also have had some fiction published. I ventured into education for a short while as a tutor of at risk youths in one of Chicago's worst neighborhoods. Currently I work as a docent at a science museum.

    GRE:  Quantitative - 148; Verbal - 162; Writing - 4.5

LORs: Journalism professor with international reporting experience, high school comparative politics teacher--who was arguably the best in the country at the time she taught me--, either a political science professor or a former co-worker with knowledge of my analytical skills

Foreign Language Skills: I'm learning Spanish and plan on picking up French soon. Currently I know a little bit of both, but am no one where near fluent.

    Age: 27

Journalism was my first choice, but I realized I'm more interested in international relations. I'm a career changer. What are my chances of attending a top tier school? Should I brush up on math and retake the GRE to improve my quantitative score?

Just a word of advice, I attended a HKS information session with a friend, and she asked about submitted AP Calculus scores as quantitative experience. The dean told her that they don't want anything from high school. A recommendation might be different, but I could imagine that admissions committees might look down upon a recommendation letter from a high school teacher.

  8. I'm still weighing my options. The other two I'm really considering -- unless GWU comes through with an amazing funding package -- are Fletcher (I feel like the program is probably the best fit for me) and CMU Heinz (I got a 100% tuition waiver there as well).

I really like the IPED program and the fact that it's in NYC. I worry about the name recognition, though. Will a degree from Fordham go as far as one from a "bigger name" school?

Did anyone hear from the International Development program? Also, what is the acceptance deadline you guys had in your letters? That might be a pointer towards funding or no funding.

I was accepted into the International Development program. The acceptance deadline is May 1st.
