Thanks for your thoughts! I hope it works out for you, too. I'm sure I'll be fine (even if I'm not admitted). I wrote last night's post when I was exhausted. A walk and some sleep helps. Good luck, everyone!

Folks, I hope this works out. Things are so stressful at home. If I'm admitted somewhere, I can leave in September. If not, I need to rethink.

I just checked my USC portal: REJECTED.
-
What is going on with usc? I can't take the suspense!
-
I'm in the same boat: let's stay positive!
-
Does USC usually send all the rejections at once?
-
I haven't heard anything from them—here's hoping. Good luck!
-
Which USC – Southern California or South Carolina? And sorry about the rejection!
-
My first official rejection: UCSD—the only school from which I have heard.

Ha! I love it!

I need a drink. And a big one.

I presume I have been rejected from Arizona. If I am shut out, I will pursue the CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults), move somewhere hot, and reapply in a year or two.
-
I decided to make a rule: I am permitted to check my email once a day. It's not working out very well.

My research interests are the philosophy of action, too. What questions/philosophers interest you? And where are you applying?

I just meant we should have a celebratory drink. By all means, drink as much—and whenever—you want to.

Have a drink, everyone--you deserve it!

Practices of Admissions Committees from Elite Schools

There is some discussion of this over at Daily Nous. -
Yeah, I think it's worth getting a letter writer to explain and flagging in your personal statement. I am unsure what to write for 'cumulative GPA' — at my university honours are awarded on the basis of one's final year and I spent my third year studying at an American university. How the hell I am supposed to combine these?

Fair enough. I contacted my POI in the summer. Actually, I didn't tell her I was applying. We had a good back and forth about her paper, but she might not even be on the committee (or remember me).

I don't know. If you have an interesting question about their work, I think it would be OK. But don't email and say, "Hey, I'm applying to your program. Put in a good word for me."

Derk Pereboom does stuff on the metaphysics of agency/free will/mind.

Do you think committee members will be impressed if you cite forthcoming work in your sample? Yes, no?
