  1. I love this thread....I am also first generation PhD and I have really bad impostor syndrome. It's nice to know that there are others out there who have the same fears that I do. My family excluding my dad are all very supportive of what I do. I will be honest and say that I never try to talk about what I do with my family...most of them won't get it ad the little time that we do have together is spent reminiscing and having fun. Most of the know I got into a PhD program and that I want to do research. The resounding chorus after that is " how do you plan to use it back home?" (home is a small developing country with zero research). I answer politely that when I get ready to return home I will teach.THE END. I am nervous of the prospect of moving to a new state and school where I know almost no one but I am excited. I didn't get the traditional college experience because two of my best friends and a bunch of other people I know came here too. I am praying that I'll be able to balance my studies and social life but I doubt it since I'm in undergrad and have no social life. But we'll see. I hope this thread keeps going, if for nothing else...moral support.
  2. Thank you. This is very helpful to me since imposter syndrome started kicking in.
  3. Now that everyone is back at school...i'm going on spring break...

  4. I am looking into American Campus Communities housing. I'm hoping that they'll do the weeding out of the crazies so that I end up with decent roommates. I spend most of my time in my bedroom anyway so as long as they're not loud, untidy or inconsiderate, I'll be fine. I'm going to stick it out there for 1 year and hopefully by then I'll have car, have met people who are roommate material. I'd also be able to pick housing which I like as opposed to convenient.
  5. I would like to thank: My mother- she's been my no. 1 cheerleader from day 1 and has encouraged me all this time (miles away) , trusted my judgment and prayed for me. My aunt- cheered me on; gave me the opportunity to get away. My boyfriend- putting up with me all these years, encouraging me and believing in me when I doubted myself. Giving ma a shoulder to cry on and a someone I could count on. My professors- providing me with the tools that I need to pursue my dream. All friends and other family for encouragement.
  6. Hey BionicKris...I visited Purdue (and got into PULSe) but decided on somewhere else. I made a couple friends there and one told me that he knew about some good apartments that weren't listed online. PM me if you'd like to get in touch with him.
  7. This thread is awesome..I just made a list of things that I need. Lifetime student....get one of those all-in-one printers..scans copies and prints. mines not very good for high resolution but ok for personal regular stuff. They go for $50.00 or less
  8. I've made up my mind but I got to know the people at the other program. Should I just click the "No" button on the link they sent to respond or should I follow up with a letter to the administrator?..Help!!!!!!!!!!! *** Reposted fro another forum.******
  9. I'd say 'A'... its seems like you'd be happier since you wouldn't have to worry about finances. Also, a young adviser may not be so bad..he/she will be energetic and involved and will want you to succeed since it reflects their success. In addition, I'm going to add that the well known professor wasn't always well known, he had to start somewhere with someone. who knows, in 10 yrs your unknown may be a big name too. Don't let the name decide your decision. I know I won't.
  10. I was at Purdue two summers ago and really enjoyed my experience. There is a really large international population there. Didn't do much hanging out but I'm sure that there are places you can go, it's a university after all. The LIRR runs bear the school so you would be in NYC in about 2 hours. I think it is located perfectly because its in a quiet area but you can get to the city whenever you like. There's an Asian center where they serve Indian, Chinese and Japanese food plus NYC will have everything that you could want. Good luck with your choice..not a bad dilema to have.
