  1. I was in the same situation. I did a Communications/Mass Media BS and then a Southeast Asian Studies MA. I am now just starting a PhD in Sociology this Fall at Cornell. Depending on your focus within Sociology, you should make sure you target NRC schools for Southeast Asian Studies. One, because they have the resources to help you continue your focus on SEA if you so wish, and two, because they are a great source of potential funding. I guess it all depends on if you want to continue with your SEA interests, but I would suggest it strongly as PhD programs like to find a niche for you to be funded. Good luck!
  2. I just got confirmation on a FLAS two days ago. The school received the funding and therefore so did I. Good thing too, considering my family and I had already moved here. I wasn't too worried though as the school wasn't in much danger of losing the funding. Their program is pretty well established. My husband did ask what I would have done if they had said there was no money this year...I said I guess laugh. Not much else to do at this point if it didn't come through! Good luck to everyone else that is waiting.
  3. I only applied to three schools for Fall 2010 admission. Looking back, that was probably not enough. I got really lucky and got into my top choice with funding, but it was pretty scary there for a bit. I guess it is for everyone, regardless of how many schools you apply to. However, that being said, I think that it wasn't so much luck as much as it was the fact that I was extremely focused on those three applications. I researched every single aspect of the schools and added to my SoP other departments, programs, facilities, etc. that might be regarded as a possible benefit to my work and research if accepted. I did my homework and I think my SoP showed that. That is the benefit of only applying to three schools.
  4. I've also been looking for a place to live from overseas. The biggest help that I received was from my department. Many places will not rent sight unseen in the city where I will be moving, so I contacted the department and they put me in contact with a graduate student in the department that was willing to meet with the landlord and take some pictures of the places for me. Extremely helpful! Hopefully, I can repay the favor at some point in the future...take her out to lunch or something. The university's housing website was also very helpful in locating places that weren't listed on craigslist, but you have to already have your university login which can be a problem for some. And finally, craigslist is a great resource. It is usually pretty legit and it can be used to find available places as well as to post ads for people in the area that might be willing to go look at the apartments and take some pictures for you in exchange for a deposit into a paypal account or something. Good luck!
  5. It is all a matter of what you do with the opportunities presented to you. I'm a first generation college graduate...that's right, even undergrad. I went to a small state school because it is where I got money. I then went on to another small state school for a Master's, but this time because I specifically picked the program that I wanted to join. It was a great decision and I've slowly worked my way up the educational ladder until this year when I was awarded a fellowship for a Ph.D. at an Ivy League school. Whether you went to an Ivy League school for undergrad or not doesn't matter in the long run if you don't work hard and go after a goal. Focus and the rest will fall into place...even for those of us whose background seems less than likely to succeed.
  6. Anyone else accepting their offer to Cornell's Development Sociology program? If so, feel free to PM me. If so, I guess we'll meet this fall anyway, but I'd love to hear your interests and which professors you're likely to work with.
  7. Anyone else starting the Development Sociology program at Cornell this fall? Or working in the Southeast Asian program?
  8. I emailed the department and they responded saying that their final meeting is scheduled for next week and that we should hear from them shortly after that. Through personal correspondence with a PA, I learned that the department only has one first-year financial aid package available, but they do have a variety of other sources such as FLAS and IGERT funding. Anyone else apply for the IGERT funding?

    Athens, OH

My husband and I just finished a Master's program in Athens and are waiting to hear where we will be moving for Ph.D. Athens is a nice little laid-back town where in general the hippy crowd outnumber the young sorority/fraternity partier type. I agree with the previous poster that it seems like it should be much cheaper than it is for housing. We rented a house just north of town and it was $950 for a three-bedroom with some land. Not too bad. My first year, I lived above the Cycle Path (a local bike shop) and it was ok, just really small. I would suggest if you have a car trying to find someplace outside of town a bit. A lot of crappy places close to campus and shady landlords. My favorite places: the farmer's market - State Street past Wal-mart. Saturday and Wednesday mornings. A lot of local farmers, strange hippy backwoods types, Mennonite and the such. Don't miss the asiago cheese bread from Avalanche Pizza...only available at the Saturday market and not at their store. (on the topic of Avalance pizza...just simply the best in Athens. no competition. don't waste you money on others...just go to Avalanche.) The Village Bakery - State Street before the highway. Great food from local sources, fair trade products in their market. A bit pricey but worth it occasionally. The Farmacy - Natural food store and cafe. Don't miss their fried tofu sandwich. mmmmm! Reasonable prices. Casa - Downtown off of Court Street. Claim to be Mexican food, but that's a stretch. A very local, healthy take on Mexican but still yummy. Seasonally changing menu based on local availability. Their sweet potato fries in autumn are amazing. The Pawpaw Fest - Every fall outside of town towards the airport. If you don't have transport try to catch the shuttle that leaves from campus. Great local fest with music, food, and activities centered around the pawpaw...don't know what it is? Go to the fest! Enjoy!
