  1. Also, It should be mentioned that funding through the NIH and I think the NSF is only available to US citizens and permanent residents.
  2. I agree with @Oddich55, I applied to grad school with only dry lab/computational biology experience and it worked in favor for the most part. Honestly, wet lab is super teachable, the computational component is harder to teach. I didn't start my research until half-way through my Junior year and had 3 publications 1 first author. Doing computational work means your greatest limit to how quickly you can produce (papers, poster, etc.) is how much time you invest and how hard it is to get data. As for the GRE 160+ on both is good goal. Also look into schools that have a focus on the crossover. I know that BU and UVa both have specific NIH training grants for bioinformatics and biomedical data science, Columbia has a department that specific for computational biology as well.
  3. @Eustice122, @mlc19 and other low GPA folks. It isn't the end of the world, I am a domestic male with a UG cumulative GPA of 3.17 and had several withdrawals on my record due to old issues. If you have decent research experience and good LORs you can make up for a bad semester (or two in my case) that took down your GPA. While I wasn't competitive to MIT, Stanford or Harvard I ended up doing pretty well. My recommendation is cast a wide net and apply to places you find interesting that might seem like a reach but make sure you have places that you feel confident that you will be able to get in to the program that has research that interests you.
  4. Probably should have clarified this as well. Known collaboration between our lab and theirs (Just not on this prpject) and have spoken to PI about sharing it with him and there is no issue. I will not be sending the manuscript I meant that is where it is at but I can send the link to the running Virtual Machine that gives to access to source code. I realize my original post is a little misleading.
  5. I am still waiting to hear back from my top choice program and I was wondering if I should send my nearly complete project to the major POI at school (rough draft of manuscript not yet submitted plus a link to virtual machine running our software) . This POI told me to keep him appraised during the interview and I sent him a thank you e-mail after the interview. I am exceptionally proud of this project and I am co-first author of the paper. Is it a good idea to send this stuff to him or will I just be seen as a pest.
  6. Good for you. Glad you were able to figure it all out. That folder thing they sent was a super nice touch.
  7. Congrats on BC. They just sent me an email to tell me I got in.
  8. If your school is on this list they should not be forcing you to make a decision so soon. Not sure how it is enforced but maybe you could contact the council of graduate services for help. http://www.cgsnet.org/ckfinder/userfiles/files/CGSResolution_Rev2015.pdf
  9. So glad they gave it to you after that screw up earlier. Congratulations! The people here are awesome and the grad students are some of the nicest people I know.
  10. I have been told not to put things that are not at least submitted to a journal on your CV if this is a paper or project that is destined for publication. That being said I have had several interviews where I brought up work that I am currently or about to be begin and got a very positive response from my interviewers. One interviewer in particular mentioned it was good to see how excited I was to be a part of a really cool project I was about to start in my lab.
  11. Ash04 why is Tufts greyed out in your interview list?
  12. The first weekend interviewees for UVa, which was Jan 8th, got some admissions offers today but there is still another interview weekend coming up.
  13. For UVa BIMS it was about 3 days but I had some idea who was going to be on it because they asked for 8-10 faculty I would like to meet from me.
  14. Undergrad Institution: State School, Top 50 Research not much else of note Major(s): Cell and Molecular Biology Minor(s): GPA in Major: ~3.59 Overall GPA: ~3.19 (Last 84 credit hours 3.84) Position in Class: No idea Type of Student: Domestic Male GRE Scores (revised/old version): Q: 163 (86%) V: 160 (85%) W: 4.0 (56%) Research Experience: 1 Year of Bioinformatics Research at Cancer Research Center, 1 Year of Bioinformatic of College Lab. 1 Poster Presentation. 2nd Author Paper Published on Proteomics and Bioinformatics. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Dean's List the Last 3 Semesters. Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Was hired by Cancer Lab to work as Lab Tech / Programmer. Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: Certification in Genome Data Analysis from Degree Granting Research Center. Special Bonus Points: My co-listed from 9 CH is 4.0 Applying to Where: Boston University Bioinformatics- PhD Boston College Bioinformatics- PhD Columbia University Biomedical Informatics- PhD Rockefeller University- PhD University of Virginia Bioinformatics- PhD MIT Bioinformatics- PhD I know that MIT and Columbia are sort of a reach but I am going to try. I have a bit of a story to tell in my Personal Statement, I struggled with some mental health issues that caused me to fail out of the first college I attended. I worked for two years and went back to school about to graduate with a 3.84 institutional GPA. I was hoping for some input on what I should disclose in applications. I recently received a retroactive withdrawal from the semester that got me booted meaning it no longer counts towards my Cumulative GPA and shows on my transcripts as W. My biggest question is what should I disclose and address in my statement. Should I state mental health or just health concerns, now that it all shows as W on my transcript should I address it directly or graze over it?
