  1. That seems imprudent and little defeatist because at least a few schools out there have wait lists. I really take issue with Rutgers changing applicants's statuses on their website but not sending out emails for weeks afterward. They do it every year, and it's always in poor taste. Poor Cornell had that CC faux pas, too.
  2. I don't really like the way fields are broken down. I'll say 19th/20th C American.
  3. I had also assumed implicit rejection for about a week before I got the email. I don't really know that I have any information that would be helpful to you. The season is far from over.
  4. I applied, too. No need to fret until you get the skinny envelope.
  5. http://www.mcsweeneys.net/links/lists/29lavelle.html
  6. The anxiety just hit me today. I've been too busy to think about it. This is the first time I've even checked TGC this year. On an unrelated note (but related to me wasting time at work), did you guys ever notice that staple removers look like little terrifying bat monsters?
  7. I'm just wondering what kind of jobs you guys are doing if you've graduated and haven't yet matriculated into a grad program. I went 0/8 on PhD apps this year, so I will be working in IT for the summer. Who knows where I'll be come September? There's no real point to this thread except to divert myself from the tedium of my job that increasingly resembles Office Space.
  8. They offered me acceptance to the masters program, but I declined because of the cost

  9. I was rejected from PhD. but accepted to MA. There is no chance I'm going to drive myself deeper into debt. I'm confident that I'll get picked up by a PhD. program eventually. There's no sense in blowing $20,000 when two more application seasons would cost less (fewer?) than $2,000, assuming it takes me that long. Maybe my reasoning makes sense for you.
  10. I still haven't heard anything from them. What should I be thinking? Please, give form to my madness.
  11. I wasn't asking a question. The professors are good and the students are smart in VCS. Job placement is a real issue to consider though. That aspect guided my applications, and I haven't gotten any acceptances, unfortunately. Rochester is definitely not known for it's humanities but there are some really, really smart professors in the English department: a MacArthur fellow (Joanna Scott), a Breadloaf program professor (Jennifer Grotz) and a few flat-out geniuses in James Longenbach, Ken Gross and John Michael. I'll end my spiel on that, but you're right. The job placement is not great.
  12. disregard my insane grammar. I have abominable editing habits.

  13. I saw your post on the UVA topic, and realize we have went very similar routes in our user name choices. I'm also waiting to hear back from Virginia, but, strangely, I'm not in any hurry. I like to feel like I'm still in the running.

  14. I'm not a huge student of film, but Rochester has a pretty good visual/cultural studies program with some really bright PhD. students. This may be something of interest. http://www.rochester.edu/college/aah/VCS/
  15. I was just using ratemyprofessor as a barometer. Many friends who I consider intelligent have taken classes with him and say he shouldn't be teaching in any capacity. But, Rochester is a great place to be otherwise

  16. I originally had no intention of doing this type of thing, but I think you need to be warned about George Grella. Check out what people think on ratemyprofessor.com. I can't explain the few favorable reviews. I've only heard bilious hatred about him. Don't let me dissuade you, the others you mentioned are brilliant-especially Peck.

  17. Just out of curiosity, who are you all interested in studying with at Rochester?
  18. Are you a student of Greek? I laughed when I saw your username becuase it reflects how I feel about getting into grad school this year . . . hahaha

  19. might any one of us even be (gasp!) . . . accepted?
  20. I'm about ready to start looking for a job for next year. Is anyone else in the same boat? This was a severely disappointing round.
  21. Hey Crutch, what's your subfield? I'm, applying for modern lit, esp. poetry. I'm finding people to commiserate with since I have also gotten straight rejections or silence so far. We have some rejections in common.

  22. I feel your pain Belltolls. I wrote an honors thesis, but I should probably have taken more time to polish it. I'm 4 rejections for 8 apps. I praying for a waitlist of pity.
