  1. So, I am trying to choose my 10-12 faculty for my UMich-PIBS interview and would like some advice. The instructions say that at least 5 of them have to be from my first choice track.  I currently have 6 from this track, MCDB, but I am worried whether I should choose more from this track.  One of the things I like about umbrella programs is that you get to try out different things, and there are multiple researchers outside of the track that really interest me, but I don't know if it is the track that is having the say in whether to offer me admission and therefore I should choose almost all my faculty picks from MCDB?  I really appreciate any feedback!  Thanks so much

Has anyone tried booking Amtrak through the website that Yale said to use?  It sounded like the charge would automatically go to a credit card with yale but the site is asking me to fill in card numbers and stuff like that.  I could just go ahead and do it and then get reimbursed but I was wondering if anyone was able to use the website already to book a flight or train to Yale?

    I booked a flight w/o problems

Your professors will understand. And in the long run what's more important? Your last semester/quarter grades or the next 4-6 years of your life? At least that's how I'm gonna look at it.

I think my professors will definitely understand (at least the ones I have talked to), but I really don't want my GPA to drop.  I am going to see what I am able to take pass/fail.

    True story.

But I'm actually in a pickle. When they called, it was really early and it was a whirlwind of info. I think I accepted without realizing I already had the Feb date confirmed elsewhere.

However, I checked the BBS website and it said the following interview dates existed.

February 5th & 6th: MCGD and CBB Tracks

February 19th & 20th: MCGD, MMPP, and Immunology Tracks

However, the letter doesn't give any option about the second interview date for MCDG. So It's either a typo, or I really hope to be able to go to that one ><
I wonder if anyone has gotten that alternate date.

I am going on the 19th date

Well, that makes it easier to accept another conflict that I had, and look forward to Stanford, lol.

Also Yale BBS (MCGD) just sent out the official letter.

I haven't gotten my official letter yet... cue the anxiety

Phew.  Just got it.  Was starting to worry I had dreamt the call!

They don't care, its just to save themselves money. Every grad program I visited last year put prospectives up in really nice (and expensive!) hotels, which is probably preferable to sleeping on a couch in a current grad student's apartment.

Thanks.  I would definitely prefer to stay in a hotel, so I chose that option, but I don't want them to think I am snobby and/or antisocial.  I just want to be well rested for my interviews and everything.

I don't know if we were offered the same dates (Cancer Biology here) but yeah, I'm having the same problem :(

I just got off the phone with Michigan saying they wanted me to visit Jan 28 or a backup weekend on Feb 4, when immediately Emory calls and asks if I can come down on Jan 28 and I said yes thinking I could go to the Feb 4 weekend at Michigan. Then I check the Michigan website and the Feb 4 weekend is crossed out!

I'm hoping it's just because they want people to go to the primary interview weekend. Hopefully, they'll let me come on Feb 4 if I explain it's my only option. Otherwise I guess I'll have to look into an independent visit or Skype interview.

Congrats.  I emailed them about it and they did it manually for me, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Yes you can.  If it is significantly different in cost they may offer to reimburse you the amount it would take to fly you home as opposed to cross country if that is the case and have you select your own return flight.  Depends on the differences in location like if you were flying from new york to virginia to get home but now would go new york to arizona...that may  not get fully changed.  Also it saves the other school having to fly you out so I'm not sure how that all works.  Can you give us the locations?

Great.  I live in California and have an interview in Connecticut followed by one in Wisconsin, so it would be really silly to have to stop over in California!

I submitted in late November and it said "Received(official)". Did you send/mail in an official copy? I thought you only need to send in an official copy when you're accepted, but as long as your application status says "complete" you're probably fine.

    Stanford wants official (2 paper or 1 e-transcript).  I sent an e-transcript.

I'm getting a little worried about my Stanford app...I logged in to their online checklist and under transcripts, it still says "Received (not official)", even though I had them sent in early November. Anyone else in the same boat? I'm hoping they just haven't updated transcript status in their online application.

Why do programs even require official transcripts for admissions purposes anyway? They have us upload scanned copies of them...

Mine showed that way for a long time but then it changed, so if they show received I wouldn't worry about it.  They probably want official in case people photoshop the uploaded ones

What you all don't realize is the politics involved in numbers and invited applicants.  A school doesn't want to get 15 spots for interviews and only get 4 applicants out of that group.  It makes it harder for that program to get 15 spots the next year among the graduate school since they were a less demanded program.

What do you mean by this?  I'm confused
