I think I'm the runt of the litter here :-P - I'm 20, and went straight from high school ---> BA ---> applying. I didn't put this on my SOP because no one would have believed me (and rightly so, so many people use it as a cliché) but I knew academia interested me starting at around the end of high school. Just like @ultraultra, I was also pretty heavily involved in the political world during my undergrad. I was vacillating between those two worlds until about a year ago, when I got more acquainted with the literature and found academic questions were much more interesting than applied questions.

No you're definitely not the only runt. I'm a 21 year old applying right out of my BA. I knew I wanted to continue on for my PhD by my sophomore year of undergrad. Nobody believed me until I started applying and getting accepted to schools!

On the other hand I'm super excited to work for some people who might be older than me and have more and different experiences than I have. I think you can learn a lot from them! ☺️

I think they might have accidentally posted on the wrong subforum based on their profile and the fact that Brown English notified people today. As far as I know, no one has heard anything from Brown Political Science yet, but I'm hoping that we will by the end of this week.

Yea that makes a lot more sense. I'm on mobile and didn't even see that they're English literature ?

So I got my first rejection today, from Brown. Disappointing, as they were one of my top choices.

So far, I've only heard from them and Oregon State, which accepted me. (Glad that email came first. :D) They didn't give me any kind of time frame, though, to make a decision. Should I just assume I can let them know by April 15th?

How did you hear from brown? I haven't heard anything yet nor did I think anyone else.

On a phone call yesterday (Monday), the Graduate Advisor (Veri Chavarin) explained to me that those who had not heard on Friday last week (Feb. 5th) are probably on wait list or rejected. But as she explained, it will take further a week or two to actually notify applicants their true status. I am also in the same boat and my subfield is IR.

Ah :/ that's quite alright, I shall survive but thank you for letting me know!

No interview from Vandy either , so probably out there, It was a reach school anyway.

Okay I wouldn't worry too much. I spoke with the DGS last week and they had a lot fewer Americanist spots than IR and I'm pretty sure he's the one who made all the phone calls on Friday to people in that subfield (since that's his area) so I wouldn't stress too much yet. Because of the way IR and Poli sci are lumped together for graduate but not undergrads I get the impression that the department would likely have poli sci and IR faculty notify their subfields a respectively instead of all at once.

Oh wow that makes me feel a lot better thank you! Did you apply there for IR as well? It's my only California school (and a reach school at that) so I'm a little more clueless of the area. I'm a New Englander lol

  6. Hi everyone,

Here is my profile for my grad school apps. I'm not necessarily looking at going to a top 10 school but I wanted to see where I really fit in with some semi top schools and mid ranked schools. I'm currently looking at applying to USC, UCLA, Brown (my higher up schools) and Syracuse, CUNY Graduate School and UCONN.

    Goal: PhD in Political Science

Type of Undergrad Institution: Small private school in MA
    Major:  Political Science
    Undergrad GPA: 3.61

Type of Grad:  N/A (Graduating Senior in Undergrad this year)

    GRE: 149 V, 152 Q, N/A AWA

Letters of Recommendation: Great. One from a former professor who teacher at Yale now, one that publishes a great deal that I co taught a course with, and one within my subfield. All know me and my work outside the class as well .

Research Experience:  Only in class research papers. Working on starting one next semester with my professor.

Teaching Experience: 2 semesters being a something close to a TA during my undergraduate.

    Subfield/Research Interests:
International Relations, theory, feminism, multi methods approaches, equality

I guess I'm most worried about my GRE scores and whether they help or hurt or neither. I know my personal statement looks very strong and my letters of recs are great. Am I competitive for the schools that I am looking at though?
