I created this account so I can let you know, I got my decision via e-mail today from BC. I was accepted. I applied on the 11th for the 2 year clinical Health/Mental Health track. I'm going to attend.

The 11th of what month? It looks like they've gotten into responding to those looking to enter the two year program!

congrats!!! If I were to attend, I would be entering the health/mental health track as well.

  2. I would have to say my top choice is Smith College. Their program is just set up unlike any other program I have ever seen. I love the idea of having class over the summer and doing my field placement somewhere else in the country full time during the year. Also, they offer such a wide range of amazing and applicable classes. I should hear back from them within the next two weeks, and I can hardly wait.

I believe I submitted my application on Janurary 2nd or 3rd and they notified me through email

Oh man I'm going to be checking my email like a crazy person now. My application was complete on December 20th!

congratulations again, though. Do you think you'll be attending?

I actually want to settle in Boston for school and long-term. I can't wait!

I applied to BC, Salem State, and Wheelock. BC is my #1, but barring basically a full ride I'll probably go to SSU. Wheelock is basically my safety school. I did visit Smith and really liked it, but I decided not to even apply once they told me about only having 2 weeks to accept admission once you're notified. It didn't add up with the other schools and it seems like you'd find out from them before you knew about all your options.

Oh yeah, that's definitely true. It only makes sense if it's basically your first choice, which it is for me.

I just recieved my financial package from Simmons, and I'm just trying to figure out how anybody pays for these programs plus the cost of living ?

Just got accepted to Boston College today, I am so excited! Has anyone else heard back? I'm a little bit nervous because while I have heard any scholarship info comes in the form of an email, I have also heard it comes through the mail. Anyone have any info on this?

Oh wow congrats!!! When was your application submitted? And how did they notify you?

  6. Hah, spoke to soon!

I still haven't gotten the letter in the mail, but I got an email in the middle of the night last night saying "Confratulations on your acceptance to the Simmons College School of Social work" so that's super exciting!!! :)

still waiting on some info about funding. I hope that'll be included in the mailed letter!!

Hey! I've seen you on the other forum, so thanks for starting a Boston specific one. I'm only applying to colleges in/near Boston. I got to visit the city and schools this past fall and LOVED it. I grew up near DC and was expecting people to be about the same, but honestly people were much nicer in Boston. I was shocked. Me starting an MSW program is basically a restart for my professional career (and I will be 30 this year), so I'm really excited to start. I've been planning the move and degree program for 2  years now, so I can't wait to see where I end up!

Also, Simmons not telling you in the email must be frustrating...I can't believe they wouldn't post the decision online.

I visited a little over a year ago and fell in love with the area as well! The people were so friendly. It really shocked me too.

Im a big travel buff, so my only qualm with attending in Boston is that I think I eventually want to settle there long term, so I may want to attend in a different area first to really experience other places before settling. That's one of the reasons Smith appeals to me so much. Honestly, though, when I picture myself in grad school the setting tends to be Boston. I guess I'll just have to see what happens!

I wish you the best of luck! What specific schools did you apply to?

That is probably one of the most evil/cruel things that the admissions department could do -
Emailing you that they made a decision, and are mailing you the results.
They dropped the mail into the department outbox (probably after the mail pickup for the day) on Friday.
Nothing gets picked up on Saturday ot Sunday
Monday happened to be a Federal holiday - no mail movement
It gets picked up by the school's internal mail on Tuesday afternoon
Delivered to the post office on Wednesday morning
4 more days before it gets to you
oops - it is now Sunday - no mail delivery
    fingers crossed for Monday.

Honestly though. I've been checking like a maniac every day since then even knowing there's virtually no way it'll be there ?

I recieved the email at 1 I the morning, too. So technically on a Saturday morning. Pretty bizarre.

I'm wondering if schools don't send out decisions without you first completing the FAFSA... my app at Simmons has been sitting for WEEKS but I haven't heard a peep out of them. Only submitted my FAFSA today so maybe that's what the holdup is... (also, is anyone else annoyed that they changed how they offer aid?)

My application to Simmons was finished on December 20th, and I got an email on Friday the 13th that they made a decision and mailed it. I haven't received it yet, though.

When was yours submitted exactly? You may want to reach out to them depending on when it was

  10. Hey everyone!

I've seen a whole bunch of area and school specific posts and decided to go ahead and start one for Boston so we can all keep each other updated.

I applied to Simmons, Boston College and Smith (which is a ways outside of Boston but I figured I'd give it a mention anyway). Simmons sent me an email that they made a decision and placed it in the mail on Friday. All of this waiting is driving me nuts!

  11. I'm applying here, but didn't make the December 1st deadline. UChicago is actually the only school I haven't finished the application for yet. I had to write a few different Personal Statements and once I finished those its been harder for me to find the motivation to finish the one for Uchicago. I'll definitely make the next deadline though!

Just received my acceptance to the Social Work/Women's Studies and Gender Studies program at Loyola University Chicago!

I'm waiting to hear about funding, but it looks like that won't happen until the March 1 priority deadline has passed. In the meantime, I'm going to apply for external scholarships and fellowships.

Have you found any good external schlarships or fellowships? I've been having so much trouble finding any!

Applied to online BU, Rutgers, Simmons and campus Portland State university(home town so instate tuition). Got admit from Simmons. Waiting for the rest of the schools to share their admit decisions ...anxious. Hoping for BU or RUTGERS

How did funding work for SImmons? I got an email that they received my FAFSA, but they requested another form. They included the link in the email, but it didn't work. Are you familiar with this form?

BC has a similar form that it requests, but the only one currently online was for the 2016-2017 year... I figure I'll just keep checking back.

Now that apps are in I'm trying to brainstorm my "plan b" (these wheels just don't stop spinning). I'm in a good corporate job but I would still very much like to relocate- maybe I could try to get some experience in the field with a 1st level addictions counselor certificate? Do overnight supervision work for very little $?  What would you do if you had to wait a year or apply to lower tier programs?

I've always figured I would look into working in an Americorps Public Allies program. Check it out, it's pretty relevant to our field because you are basically placed in a non-profit for 10 months and working for a stipend.

Thanks for the response! I know it's a shot in the dark.

Yes- urbanitism is real, and it is my issue as well. I am fairly under the city spell and committed to studying and working in metropolitan areas.

For anyone looking now or in the future, I did end up making a massive list of schools to compare out-of-state tuition. There are a number at 20k+ around the country. The only school (as of Fall 2016) I found in a large city for 15k/year or less was Georgia State in Atlanta. I'm still a bit unfamiliar with the program, but there it is. (As a disclaimer, I am not only selecting schools based on tuition, as tuition is really only part of anyone's decision making process. But since I am now pretty much out of state everywhere, I was trying to decide on a couple financially 'safe' schools).

May I ask, what schools in large cities did you find that were around 20k?

  16. Would anyone who has been accepted as an out of state student mind sharing the funding that UIC offered? I am interested in applying at UIC (next application season) but I am from out of state, and worry that it would be a waste of time considering that I would not get the cheaper in-state tuition price, and since its public the school may not be able to offer me much funding compared to a private school.

I'm an out of state student waiting to hear back from UIC, but I can confirm that I received a 2/3 tuition scholarship from UChicago for Fall '16. Hopefully I'll be able to respond again soon with some information about UIC!

Congrats on UChicago! Do you mind if i ask what type of prior experience you had in the field before applying, and how much of it? I'm also trying to figure out just what exactly I should be trying to get on my resume in the months before I start filling out applications

  18. Hey everyone!

I am wondering if anyone has any info on the aid that university of Chicago and UIC gives out on average? Uchicago's program is so appealing, it seems just perfect. However, all I ever seem to read about is how absurd the price tag is. It says on their website that 95% of admitted students are offered aid, but I wonder what that entails? Is it even worth applying? I hope someone can shed some light on this for me!

On another hand, I know UIC is highly regarded, and is also known to be cheaper. However, I would be applying as an out of state student. As far as I can tell, it seems that private schools are a better but for us out of state applicants because they have more money to offer.

I am going to be starting the application process to MSW programs in fall 2016, for fall 2017. My list of schools I'm interested in has ballooned to about 8, which I think I should be able to cut down. I want to knock one of these two off of my list, as I'm starting to think they are kind of just pipe dreams in terms of finances.

Can any of you share your experiences with either of these schools?

Hi Haley, Hopefully I can help you out a little bit on this. Any experience you can connect with social work would be acceptable. Just going on what you described I would start with the experiences at the ED clinic and counseling center since those are more applicable. However if you can relate your experience with children in what you want to do in the future (for example I am going towards pediatric clinical social work, so I use my experience with kids to relate to the developmental aspects of childhood and pathological versus non-pathological development) then I would definitely include it. Related experience doesn't always have to be work or paid experience. I would even suggest picking up more volunteer opportunities to show that you're dedicated to this work, even if they're one time things like homeless outreach, food drives, etc. Also I wouldn't necessarily focus on the amount of time you've been there, but rather elaborate on the things that you did at the positions. I'm convinced my volunteer history is why I was accepted so you're off to the right start! Best of luck!

Thank you so much! I think I will start volunteering at a crisis intervention center soon. Hopefully thatll give me some good stuff to work with!
