No, unfortunately…they make you set up an ID system and it takes about 24 hours.  My fault for not setting it up earlier.

Ok thanks for claryfing. Thats kind of annoying on their part, esp. in conjunctiom with their visit having been so late :(

Maybe you could still email the DGS informing him unofficially about your decision though.

Declining Cornell and will decline Stanford tomorrow once the system is set up for me.  I cried a little…super hard decision for me.  But I'm excited to be at Columbia!

At the risk that I sound annoying (which I really don't want!!), could you not decline Stanford today if you already know you want to? (Via email, as most of us have been doing.) It is my top choice and I worry they will run out of time :(( Sorry if that sounded badly, I really didn't mean to!:) And congrats on Columbia!!

(esp. as most of these people are not on gradcafe and many will wait until the last second to pressure schools to up the stipend offer)

Let's not exaggerate with the negotiation point: most of the top schools (the private schools) don't negotiate the stipends they're offering, because 1) the stipends they're offering guarantee a really comfortable life in comparison to other programs, 2) they have a philosophy or policy of giving the same mount of money to every grad, so that there is no resentment.

Yeah, I'd probably take any of my WL schools. UCSB would be fine, but I'd prefer to go somewhere with a better placement record.

Cool :) Though I recommend setting up a ranking of these 5 places in your mind, because once it comes to choosing you won't have much time :)

I think an argument can be made for even 1 or 2 spots. It's really depends, I guess. Hard to generalize. The ranking are (obviously) a product of faculty, etc ... and when you consider those difference it becomes more easy to appreciate what 1 or 2 spots means.

I'd say overall 1, or 2, or 3 spots down don't matter at all, in terms of overall prestige. When it comes to individual faculty members, of course - this depends on AOI.

The motto all too often seems to that when things are close "go wherever you think you'd be most happy." Sorry to be cynical, but it's just so difficult to predict "where you'd be more happy" and often even locations that seem at first glance less attractive end up being fine. My brother went to college in the middle of nowhere in the midwest (after growing up in NY... I don't mean to belittle the midwest but I hope you get the idea) and he was completely fine with it. We only get the chance to enroll in a PhD program once. Sometimes going with the prestige (over e.g. location) is the way to go.

Good point. I've been wondering the same thing lately... But, then, I suppose prestige only comes into play when the difference between two schools in e.g. the overall TGR ranking is more than 4-5 spots?

Huge ball of anxiety today. I can't get any work done because I'm constantly checking my email. It's pretty crazy to think that I submitted these apps in November and here we are on April 8th and I'm still waiting, possibly for a negative result. Something tells me this might be the longest week of my life. I can't wait for it to be over.

Since there's no nail biting or vomiting emoji this will have to do

I feel you. Half of the bloody year... What's your #1 choice? :) UCSB would be awesome too, in any case, right?

From what I understood, first year graduate students are guaranteed housing for the first year only. They aren't guaranteed their preferences, but they are guaranteed a spot somewhere.

Great news, thanks! And presumably (or so I've heard) the housing keeps being guaranteed unless one decides to leave campus (then it's difficult to come back in)? Just making sure it's not just that it's only guaranteed for the 1st year.

  9. Today I declined my offer of admission at Johns Hopkins... I found it emotionally draining, as I've really enjoyed my visit there and their community, and I've been treated really kindly by them during the whole process. So, whoever ends up at JHU - it's s wonderful and supportive place, and you're choosing well!! :) Good luck to everyone wait-listed by JHU.

  10. Hi all,

I may end up at Stanford from August onwards, too. I was wondering whether on-campus graduate housing is guaranteed (as long as you apply by the deadline before your 1st year), or if it's also a lottery if one gets it at all.

  11. Yeah, but presumably the decision is between one and another program (in most cases), so - since accepting one offer (even off the WL) entails rejecting another - it does not make much sense to do anything after the 15th and put in trouble other applicants waiting (say, if you eventually don't accept your offer off the WL, you're not giving a chance to someone else who is after you on this WL to do so).

I can't do it. I was seriously considering only two more programs, having whittled down the list of five. But there is no way in hell I'd be able mentally and emotionally to handle being 8+ hours from my family and significant other in order to go to the best program I got into, and it wouldn't make sense to go to the lower ranked one. I just know it wouldn't work. I sent emails to all of my programs rejecting their offers today, and I'm going on the non-academic job market tomorrow. I just thought I should post this. Sorry, everyone. Being able to do philosophy just is not as important to me as being near my family and partner. I sincerely apologize to anyone I have inconvenienced, and I wish you all the best. I hope you all get to stay near your loved ones.

Very courageous and thoughtful - good luck with your future endeavours!! :)

Which programs have you declined? (Any chance it was Stanford and/or Yale?) :P

Which is why the rankings, especially area rankings, should always be taken with a shaker of salt.

My favourite example of this is comparing the phil of religion PGR rankings from 2011 to 2015. In 2011, UNC-Chapel Hill was ranked 2nd (I think) in the English-speaking world for philosophy of religion. In the most recent ranking, it's nowhere to be found. Why? Because the Adams family moved from UNC to a 3-year position at Rutgers' new Centre for the Philosophy of Religion, which is also why (along with Zimmerman) Rutgers is currently in the PGR's second tier.

Especially when dealing with smaller/less well-known AOIs, the PGR should only be used to point you towards those departments where big names in the field are to be found... and even then, if you've done your homework, you should be able to do that without the PGR's help :)

Exactly. I don't grasp how Berkeley is ranked "rounded mean score less than 3.0" for Kant whilst having 3 good Kantians, and amongst them a star (H. Ginsborg).... -.-

Not having visited anywhere, Cornell would probably be my top choice but, restricted to my actual offers, my top choice would probably be Pittsburgh. But my view might change after my visits which is why I'm not going to eliminate any more choices until after I visit (before the end of March!).

Correct! Best of luck - and patience - during the decision making process! :)

Declined Simon Fraser and Loyola Chicago. Removed myself from Notre Dame's and Johns Hopkins' wait lists. Will decline 2 of the following by the end up the month after I've visited: UC-Irvine, OSU, and Pittsburgh. Trying to keep things moving for those of us on wait lists. I'm waitlisted at UCSD and Cornell and will wait to hear back from them. My main AOI is Kant's theoretical philosophy and Leibniz.

    Best of luck to everyone!

Another Kantian, hey! What are you top choices?
