On the topic, I was waitlisted to one of my "safety" schools. Haven't heard back from anywhere else, but it's early. Wonder if this is different from being rejected? As in, I sort of fit or sort of had the grades to make it in. Bad sign for my chances at other programs? The waitlist is small thought - only 5 for a cohort of 10-25. I agree with what others are saying - fit is the most likely explanation in your case. Could also be the case that your safeties thought your stats were so good that they didn't think you would consider them among other options. Congratulations!

Congratulations to all for the UC Davis acceptances! Was just notified of my waitlist status - not so bad after freaking out, thinking I'd be rejected once everyone received their good news. Any idea on how long the waitlist might be? The wording of the letter was sort of strange - "Wait List status indicates that your application has met the minimum admission criteria and that the graduate program has expressed interest in recommending admission but does not currently have available space in your area of focus. " Happy for all that have been admitted and hopeful for all still waiting! BTW, my subfield is theory.
