PhD Biomedical/Bioengineering/EE Fall 2016 Profiles

That is okay I hope to hear back at least from a few good schools! I honestly trust the application process so I am not too bummed out. I will be depressed if I get rejected everywhere. -
PhD Biomedical/Bioengineering/EE Fall 2016 Profiles

I did not get an email so I am assuming I was rejected. They do not have other interview invites throughout the month correct? -
I know that they start to send out interviews in early January and sometimes go up to late February. I think you should be fine your GPA is really good! I know a lot of people who have gotten into really good schools with lower GPA than yours! I think the most important aspect of your transcript honestly is that they want to see a trend in which you do better and not worse. I also think your major classes in terms of GPA and grade wise are probably more important than for other classes.

Hi Guys I am a question: I recently got a fee waiver without requesting it to UChicago IME program. I guess they noticed activity on my profile and sent me a waiver and strongly encouraged me to apply to their program. Is this fairly common to happen? Also how good is their molecular engineering program if anyone knows? Thanks!

Has anyone heard of U Chicago IME graduate program? Is it good? Also what is their ranking I could not find it on Google.

I agree as well, it is not up to that person to decide if one is good for a Ph.D or not. My father's GRE/GPA scores were very low when he applied to graduate school, yet he still was able to enter a fairly good EE program, and now he is a senior design engineer at Intel making a lot of money. Graduate applications are a holistic process and not everyone with a 4.0 and great GRE scores will get in and same vice versa. It is really hard to predict and that is why we are all on here freaking out lol.

Why do biology programs respond faster than bioengineering programs? I am getting anxious becauseI will probably only start to hear back early January :/

I emailed the bioengineering graduate advisor and she told me that the listed cutoffs are a recommendation rather than a set cut off. Or maybe I am misinterpreting her, here is her response: The admissions committee reviews all applications received. They look at a variety of things when they consider you which is why the website lacks a clear outline of admissions requirements. In no particular order, previous research experience, grades, recommendations, GRE scores, classes you’ve taken, your personal statement and interviews are all likely to be considered.Although your GRE verbal score is below the cutoff, the cutoff is a recommendation and not a definitive number. What do you guys think?

Okay I definitely will talk to him or email him once I go to work on Monday! Thanks for your advice! :)

That is such a good point. Maybe I can just go by their office or something. Do you think that would be okay (without seeming annoying obviously lol)

My lab is really great but I really don't want to stay especially since my school has so many labs with the research I am interested in. I like your last quote and will be making drafts of emails and send them out to my post-doc that I work with so he can see whether they are good or not. I will also ask my PI since he is probably more respected than I am haha

The reason I am doing this really late is because my PI suggested that I do it after classes are done and before the application is due (Dec. 20). I am applying to a program in my university actually, and the PI I am interested in is actually a former graduate student in the lab I work in at the moment. I never met her however since this was like 10 years ago. The main reason I am applying is because that specific department told me that my application would be thrown out since I am applying from the same school (they dont accept people that apply from my university). My PI told me that the only way I could get in is if I directly contact the faculty members whose interests align with mine. The reason I am applying to the same school is because my father is very ill and I am also getting married in the summer, so I would like to stay with my future husband in the same city. I know this is TMI but these are my circumstances. My main question is what kind of letter should I write to them without seeming inappropriate, etc.? Should I explain this situation to them?

Why wouldn't it be appropriate after the application? Won't it be easier for them to check you out, etc.?
